"Best hip pack on the market" 08/30/11
This compact day pack is the bee's knees, and probably the most durable pack I have ever owned. It is very adjustable and has worked as a loaner day pack and vacation carry bag for more than 10 years now. Absolutely nothing has gone wrong with this pack, and it's been used hard. It is capable of ferrying 12 liters of water over 10 miles with surprising comfort. Wide hip belt, cavernous main compartment, zippers, fabric and seams are top notch.
"Big, burly, awesome" 06/30/11
Carried mine everyday for 3 years doing trail work. Fits everything you need on a day hike. Strap anything extra to the outside. Puts up with quite a beating. Water bottles sometimes pop out of side pockets when the pack is stuffed, but you can fix that by putting the cinch bungies over the top of the bottles. Works pretty well as a bike pack and brief/laptop case for city dwellers. I had the Tour, but it was too tiny. I love my pack.
"Most sophisticated "fanny" packs on the market!" 04/11/11
These things are ruggedly constructed of 420 denier Cordura and I have yet to punch a hole, tear out a zipper, or have ANY type of problem in nearly a decade's use. I used them with the mountain bike (on trail and in town) and variously as book bags, shopping bags, camera bags, and tackle bags; along with being strapped to full-sized packs as an extra large accessory pocket. In short, the Lumbar Day is the personification of Morilla's Law #1 for Packs - You can always get a big pack to carry a small load better than you can make a small pack carry a big load.
"Recycling is good for the environment" 08/11/10
I ordered this pack trying to replace my backpack. It's great for a small laptop but not much room for my books. I'm in a band and use it now for my sheet music and guitar supplies. The waist straps were a disappointment because they get in the way and I cannot remove them. Comfortable for a "messenger bag".
"Great Bag for traveling" 12/21/09
I love this bag. It is perfect for traveling because it's the perfect carry on size. If you're traveling somewhere that you feel like you may get pick pocketed, I highly recommend this because you can swing it around to the front unlike a traditional backpack so you can keep an eye on your stuff the whole time. Plus, you don't have to worry about taking it off and setting it down to dig through it. Also, the lumbar is super comfortable all day so it's a perfect day pack for walking everywhere on your adventures.
"Awesome pack for just about any use." 06/18/09
This pack is great to use for anything. You can throw books in it or put a towel and some reading material for the pool. Mountainsmith is great quality stuff and you can't go wrong with this purchase.
"Amazing Pack for Absolutely Everything" 06/09/09
I got this pack for doing my field work, and since then I've used it for absolutely everything from running errands to hiking the dunes. It's got a super comfortable strap and is big enough to hold textbooks. With the interior pocket in the main compartment, it's easy to keep small things organized, too. All in all, very well designed and fun to use!
"Classic lumbar -- what is better?" 03/26/09
I've used a couple versions of this bag over the decades and dragged them all over the world. The Mountainsmith Day works great in the mountains, or in the airport. Over the years, fabrics have changed, zipper pulls have changed, straps have been moved and simplified, but this bag is the real deal -- bombproof and, now, even made from recycled materials. Use it as a backpack with the optional Strapettes. It carries very, very comfortably as a lumbar bag, a backpack (with excellent waist strap, of course), or as a shoulder bag with the included strap. It's not as light as some ultralight stuff, but I think the comfort makes up for the extra weight.
"recycling is hot. so are lumbars" 03/05/08
I got this bag to replace my old Mountainsmith Cairn i think it was that got stolen a while ago. It's close but not quite / The bag holds quite a bit- including a laptop if you like, but the shoulder strap placement is a little awkward - too close together.
