The MSR WhisperLite Universal is a hybrid-fuel stove which offers the convenience of running on canisters and the versatility of accepting liquid fuels (including cold-weather performance). The AirControl™ technology optimizes the fuel/air mixture for perfect performance with white gas, canister fuel, kerosene and unleaded gasoline. No matter where you go in the universe, you'll find a fuel to use with this stove. Even if you go to Jupiter, there will be some sort of space gas that the WhisperLite Universal could run on.... if not, just use some of your rocket fuel.

(warning: do not actually run this stove on rocket fuel. And make sure you know a thing or two about Jupiter before camping there.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have for winter camping Great stove! Easy to use and white gas is a must have for winter camping. I recently took this stove on an overnight camping trip with my 10 year old son, Ian, and the temperature was between -5 and 10 deg F (I was cold but Ian was fine ... he's kinda bad ass). It was my first winter camping trip where I didn't need to stick the fuel canister down my pants before making dinner. I'm not sure that it made the trip better, but at least Ian didn't have to wait (he's always hungry ... I don't know where it all goes). The option to use fuel canisters is nice too, and it does make it universal after all, but not essential.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best of the best. My father and I have been using the Whisperlite for years, and loved it. The versatility and the multiple fuel capacity has gotten us out of a few jams before. I took it upon myself this summer to pick up the Universal, excited to see the grooved stamped stainless steel legs, as well as the ability to use Isobutane, making it, in my opinion, truly universal. The stand to flip the canisters was also an added bonus, especially in the winter when we go to cut logs for the cabin. I found the fuel line a little stiffer than our old Whisperlite, but it causes no problems. Very impressed, and looking forward to future innovations.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very flimsy canister connection threads About the 4th time using this stove, the threads that connect to the canister got slightly crossed and it was immediately damaged and unusable. Fortunately, we were not in the wilderness. I was used to having MSR stoves with complete brass fittings, and never had that issue with them, ever. I won't replace it with a stove that doesn't have solid brass fittings.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great kit, but Canister threads won't last a wknd. Bought this stove a while ago and had been running it on White gas and it works great. But, On last long weekend decided to give the canister mode a try. And after the second day of use, the threads wore of and now it takes considerable use to screw the canister, not to mention a lot of gas loss while trying. Tried looking for a replacement but it seems that the only thing available is for the fuel pump. What is the benefit of paying for the dual function if one of them will not last even a weekend....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ready for anything I've used this in deserts and near freezing temperatures, with winds upwards of 20mph, and even on unstable surfaces. Pairing the Whisperlite Universal with the Trillium base and using a little bit of creativity to block the wind makes this a very versatile and dependable stove. The "fireball" that some people see while priming the stove can be controlled with muscle memory and experience - you'll get used to how much to pump the fuel bottle in order to let a small trickle of fuel into the priming cup. My only complaint might be about the rigid hose. Once I got used to dealing with that, it didn't bother me too much.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile but should have METAL threads I love everything about this stove except for the places that they use plastic where metal is needed: threads and pump body. If you are careful with the threads I'm sure it'll last a long time. I use this in cold weather and when cooking for a larger group. In warm weather my all-in-one system from another company is my go-to. Fits in my 2L and 1.7L pots but your pot's aspect ratio will determine what works. The supports are improved from the last version: sturdier and work really well with textured-bottomed pots. Simmer works well with less pressure though most of my backcountry cooking is boiling. Looking forward to traveling with this and not having to worry about fuel!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Seems to burn just about anything I've had this stove for a few years now, I've run it one Gasoline, white gas, kerosene, and butane. Kerosene, being an less refined fuel, sooted up the stove pretty bad, but the soot didn't stick. I only recently started using butane in it because I somehow managed to damage my fuel pump. I say if you are looking for a stove that you don't want to ever have trouble finding fuel for, this is the stove for you. it's a mite heavy, but I'm a big guy and don't really care. Maintenance is easy, I just looked up a couple of youtube videos on how to field strip and clean it, I think that's important to know how to do.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Robust, easy to work on. Here are my results: - Weight, burn/boil rates are found online in other reviews. - Usage: How I use my stoves is because where and when I hike. I do most of my hiking in the fall and winter here in New Hampshire in the White Mtns. Depending and temps and wind I do cook inside of my tent. - Conditions I will not tolerate in any stove: Flair up when lighting Not being able to position stove on insulating pad while cooking. (stove becomes too hot or directs heat downward to melt pad.) That being said, here are my suggestions for the MSR whisperlite universal: Results based on use of MSR 11oz. fuel bottle. Before using the whisperlite for the first time, I took everything apart per instruction manual and and lubed with a synthetic oil. Also put a drop of oil on all threads and fuel probe. Installed white gas nipple and fuel adapter. Lighting/priming: I use alcohol to prime all my gas/kerosene stoves. I carry a plastic squirt bottle. size and amount depends on duration of outing. - No difference in fuel weight since I am saving the stove fuel lost in priming. Plastic bottle weight is minor. 1) If fuel bottle is not filled, fill to recommended line and reinsert pump. 2) Pump bottle three times only. Actually two will do once you get use to this method. 3) Connect fuel bottle to stove. 4) Place stove over flat round aluminum heat reflector, or you will burn whatever the stove is place on. Use foil wind/reflector and place to block wind if necessary. Use will direct more heat to stove and pan. 5) Fill priming cup and squirt alcohol around burner head. 6) Light. Alcohol is almost invisible in anything but dark shade. Watch liquid level in priming cup. 7) When priming cup is empty turn valve on pump all the way open. Listen for vaporized gas hiss, light with match. NO Flareup, NO soot. stove is now on low, great for anything but boiling. 8) Pump up as necessary to boil. To go from boiling to simmer: 1) If stove not at high pressure, pump it up. 2) Make sure valve is open all the way. 3) Flip fuel bottle over, extend valve handle to act as a support. 4) Stove will flame out shortly. It will take longer and sometimes not work at all if pressure was too low before flipping. 5) Listen or count to 5. 6) Flip fuel bottle and pump back to run position and relight stove. You may need to pump it once or twice. You are now at low simmer. Using valve, adjust flame as low as possible before it turns to yellow flame. To extinguish: 1) Pump up stove to high. 2) Valve all the way open. 3) Flip fuel bottle over using valve handle as support leg. 4) Stove will flare out shortly. 5) Close valve with fuel bottle still flipped over. 6) Detach stove from fuel bottle with no fuel drippings. Overall Impressions: The MSR Whisperlite Universal stove works great on canister fuel. One of the best simmers I have experienced, (oil screw threads before attaching first canister on new stove). Getting it to run well on white gas/Coleman fuel for my demands took a little experimentation, kerosene is another matter which I haven't pursued and probably won't, unless I can't get white gas/Coleman fuel. Conclusions: The MSR Whisperlite Universal stove does fit my requirements for an all around stove. I'm not comparing the MSR to other stoves, I am only seeing if it will fit my personal requirements for an outback stove. Will see how it works this Fall and Winter in the Whites.

What is the smallest pot/mug I can put on the stove? Can I use it with my Snowpeak mug that has a bottom diameter of 3.5 inches?

Asked by: Jimbo
Thanks for reaching out to us. From our findings is that the diameter of the stove is 3" but the smallest size pot/mug that would fit on the stove without damaging itself is 4.5-5". We hope this helps.
