"Filter like a Pro" 04/15/13
I bought this "Hiker Pro" filter in hopes that is would fit my amateur "Hiker" filter. It did! The nice thing about this one, (other than being gray instead of blue), is that it comes with an additional protective screen which extends the life of your filter. I pumped a gallon of clear water through and foamy grey water came out the first time. Don't be alarmed, this is normal. I pumped another gallon through and it cleared up crystal clear drinking water! Ah...Get you one!

After three seasons of occasional use the original filter was working a little slower, so I replaced it with this. Fixed the problem. Remember to be careful where you stick your hose because not everything just washes off the next morning. If you plan to get dirty try using a coffee filter over the intake hose.

I'm an AT thru-hiker with 975mi so far. Most of the water I filtered came from mtn springs. I started having difficulty pumping after 465mi. I field maintained it without difficulty. It easily disassembles to remove grit & relubricate with the provided silicone (more than enough 4 the intitial install). That helped get me as far as 830mi b4 needing replacement. All the water I filtered looked so pristine that I wondered what kind of water Katadyn had in mind when they said their filter could last 800qts. I pumped ~200 qts b4 it became difficult to pump thru. The contrast in figures was disappointing but wouldn't have been if their estimate had been a little more realistic.

So I have an old Pur model filter and this is the cartridge that fits it. My old filter lasted a long time. I really do like this system. Its a little bulky and there are better ones out there but for the money this thing is BOMBER!

This is a great easy to change filter. It lasts quite a while as long as you don't try to filter water that is too murky. It comes with a tube of silicone lube that has way more than you need for the filter. If you are resourceful, you can figure out a good way to put the rest of it to good use.

The new cartridge looks like my old one, but is much cleaner. I am tempted to not use it so I can keep it clean so it should last a really long time. My previous filter cartridge bit the dust, actually it was glacial silt, on a recent climb. The protective sleeve that now is included with the cartridge should help prolong its life in this 'extreme' environment. Time will tell.

I bought this on sale to have as a standby. My Katadyn Hiker Pro is easy to use and relatively light weight compared to some others. The replacement catridge is great to keep on hand because when you need it... you really need it now!

These filters are great! Katadyn ships them with a simple to use kit that makes changing out your filters a snap. It even comes with a new set of instructions, new cleaning spounge, and lubricant. Just great, like all Katadyn products!
