"Great versatile tool!" 01/30/13
This is probably the most versatile ice axe/tool on the market. It feels light and comfortable, while glacier walking. Definitely suitable for self arrest. On the other hand, I recently climbed vertical ice with it. As reviewers mentioned before, it is definitely possible with two of those bad boys. While not as comfortable and a little more strengthening than using classical ice tools, it still feels surprisingly good. If you are going on more technical alpine climbs, this is the best hybrid axe on the market.
"Great ice axe" 01/28/13
Use this extensively in the white mountains for moderately technical ice and snow climbing. I replaced the classic pick with the tech pick and it climbs ice good yet not too aggressive for self arrest. I have climbed up to WI3+ with this and would not want to try anything harder. Nice feel when swinging over head and light enough for piolet canne. Works really well glissading with the spike in the snow as a brake. I have even climbed short rock pitches and it will get you by on easier terrain. Go to tool for Huntington ravine or the likes. Will accompany me to Rainier this summer.
"In love!" 11/15/12
I just fell in love with this an ice ax! It's ideal. Need to practice techniques for stopping breakdowns. So nice to stay with any of the previous ice ax, I could not. In addition, he is great and the technical climbing: Good bend, does not slip in your hand, comes in a cool ice. Recommend. In the summer I go to Kamchatka and take it with you!
"Great all-around axe!" 09/25/12
The Black Diamond Venom has replaced my classic piolet. Easy to use in the cane position, the slight bend helps in the high dagger position, and the rubber grip is nice all the time. Tech pick is available. Black Diamond's all-around axe is more pricey than your standard piolet, but incredibly more versatile - some advantages of a technical ice tool, and all the comfort of a classic ice axe.
"So good I bought two...." 11/04/11
Got the 64cm classic first as my first technical axe. Works great in snow and ice, as a classic should. I got the 57cm hammer next with the technical pick. Should have gotten two of the same size because swinging different length axes is strange. That being said, a very durable axe. The curve at the top of the shaft is just enough to avoid bashing my knuckles on ice, but i wish the leash was more comfortable.
"Great axe at an even better price" 06/07/11
The adze/hammer option is great. It also comes with a leash in all models. This axe is comfortable to hold no matter which way you carry it and in my opinion second only to the Black Diamond Viper. It's built to last and cheeper than similar axes made by other brands.
"really great and light tool" 05/22/11
For years I used a piece of iron with ice axe shape...now I've rock the base camp with my stylish VENOMworks really good, easy to carry and to use it both with the normal and the banana pickthe hole in the shovel could be a little bigger to put a carabine if you need it (big carabiners are hard to put inside)the grip is great especially if you are using it at midday when snow melts, and it doesn't break when you use it as a poleNo, I want my hammer!
"Great All Around Axe" 12/11/10
You can take my review with a grain of salt since this is the most technical axe I've ever used, but so far it has preformed excellently in many different alpine terrains. On steep snow couliors the bent shaft helps keep your hands dry. On mixed rock and easy 5th class, the axe is technical enough to climb with, and the leash makes it very easy use your hands when you need to. I upgraded this with the tech pick and keep the classic as backup and I love it! its a great axe!
"Very good axe" 12/16/09
Whitney Expedition, loved it.Its very light, it has a decent angle to grab onto rocks and provide a great tool for pulling yourself up onto a ledge or simply provide support as your making your way through rough terrain. I would recommend this as a general mountaineering tool and would go with a longer handle instead of a shorter handle. Very strong axe overall, love how you can replace the pick as well. I beat the crap out of its great that I dont have to buy a whole new axe.
"Very good if not great all purpose tool." 06/02/08
A nice semi-technical ax/tool for alpine ascents. Very important 64cm length for use with piolet canne. Interchangeable picks are a plus. My only concern is the rubber grip failing after repeated plunging into firm snow.
"It's so strong and sooooo lite." 03/05/08
The Black Diamond Venom Adze w/Pick has a perfect angle at adze ends to climb up the mountains and a straight shaft just in case of emergency. The pick is replaceable if you wore it down or break one on a hard rock accidentally. If you six feet tall, I recomment 64cm shaft and also 57cm and 50cm are available for those who are shorter than six feet.
