Rated 5 out of 5 by from High Quality, Light Weight I've only used this axe a couple of times, but it extremely durable for the weight. I bought the 75cm because I'm about 6.2" and the size is great for basic mountaineering. I mostly use it as a walking stick when going up steep, icy, and windy terrain ( i.e Mt. Washington NH ). But it is also great for self arrests, cutting steps, and slowing down while glissading. I recently moved to CO and hope to use it much more often on the 14ers out here. I recomend getting the wrist strap for it. It can be easy to drop if you happen to fall or slip and the strap keeps it close by at all times.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Axe While not as light as it's shiny, stainless steel sister, it still has its advantages. For example, this one has a larger adze then the raven pro. For the price, it will do everything that you need it to, up to and including looking badass in the summit pictures. Holding it in "self-arrest" mode is very comfortable as the pick has a little indentation for your fingers. Lots of places to clip stiff to, including a hole in the adze if you just want to bury your pick in the snow and use it as an anchor like that. It would also be useful while protecting the lip of a crevasse during crevasse rescue to back it up. ,,,,A well thought out and designed axe. If you want it lighter, go with the R-Pro.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great ice axe for 99% of climbers I have done most of my climbing in the Teton range and this is a perfect ice axe for me. It's well constructed and fairly lightweight. The adze cuts well and the pick digs in quickly. There are eyelets on each end to thread a climbing rope for belaying and other operations. You can find instructions online for measuring to get your size. I ended up finding a sizing chart and picked the middle size for my height. If you're more of a hiker, go on the long side. If you're more of a technical climber, the short side.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice axe! Does everything a general mountaineering axe should! Ive taken mine up quite a number of peaks and shes shown a bit of wear but who wants a shinny axe anyway! Don't use her as much anymore since Ive gotten into more technical mixed climbing but shes still at my side for any for anything else. All in all great axe wont regret the buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This ice axe will last longer than probably yourself This ice axe is meant for less technical styles of mountaineering but for self arresting and using it as a snow anchor, it works flawlessly. It's not the heaviest or the lightest but it's a great deal for an ice axe. I sharped mine with a simple metal file to give it extra bite.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best General Mountaineering Axe for the Price This is the axe to own for general mountaineering. I've used it extensively in the Cascades of Oregon and Washington and on a high altitude mountaineering trip in the Peruvian Andes. Fits well in the hand when walking upright. A bit heavier than the Pro version, but this can be helpful if you cut very many steps with it. Durable. Mine has been through a lot, and apart from scratches on the shaft which are purely cosmetic, it's in perfect condition. Most of my friends that I climb with use the same axe and they are all as happy with it as I am.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Need a general mountaineering axe? Your search ends here. Call me old school, but I believe an ice axe is the last place to try to save weight. You want something strong and burly. If you want to cut ounces, go for a jog and lose the love handles.,,,,The Raven is perfect for self belay and self arrest. Make you get it long enough - if you need something shorter, get a more technical axe like the BD Venom.,,,,And after all my harping about weight, the difference between this and the pro model actually isn't all that much. It is still very lightweight. It's not a pain to carry on a long climb. I find it to be the perfect weight for chopping steps, for example, but I wouldn't want it any lighter.,,,,What really sets the Raven and the Raven pro apart from the others? In the end, it's the comfort in your hand. It's vastly more comfortable than most Grivel or Petzl axes. It is easy to get a good grip on this thing when your life depends on it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic axe. Can count on it when you need it! Got this axe originally because it is pretty well priced and suitable for most of my trips. Figured it would be more of an emergency tool than anything. But when I found myself sliding out of control down an icy mountain face towards a very large and fast flowing river, it became the best piece of equipment I have ever bought! ,,If you don't have an axe, get one! You never know when you will need it.
