One of these is a necessity for multi-pitch or any other situation when you might be belaying at the anchors from above the climber. You might not need one of these at first; but, it does everything any other tube device does and then some, so you might save some long run cash by getting one of these right from the start.Make sure your rope diameter is appropriate for the device.

"Clunky. Light. Strong." 06/06/13

This thing is big. As long as my biggest locker and 2.5x as wide. Also, the "platinum" sold here on MJ is not so much shiny as it is charcoal gray with a matte finish. After 2 weeks of daily use there hasn't been any paint/contact wear.Top-roping: For thicker gym top ropes I flip the device so that the friction teeth are up. This takes them out of the system for the most part and the rope feeds a fair deal smoother through the tube than with the teeth down.Leading: Our gym lead ropes are about 9.8mm, maybe 9.5. I have the teeth down at brake and they seriously assist in catching a fall without impeding the feeding of slack. As for lowering, the Guide heats up pretty quickly, but by the time your climber has untied and pulled the rope it's back to room temp.Auto-block: I prefer the Guide to the Petzl Reverso because even though the Reverso allows you to fit another biner in the release hole, you'd still have to set up a simple pulley if your climber was really heavy. It's legit.

Great belay device, definatly worth it to get this rather than the normal ATC. May be more, but as you get better you want the best.

"Nice, simple, easy to use." 04/19/13

It works great - simple, easy, light. It's definitely worth the extra cash to have the guide function in my opinion. Even if you don't plan on needing it immediately it doesn't hinder the normal functioning of the device at all and it's nice to know you always have the option.

Multifunctional belay device. Guide mode is absolutely useful for belays. cheap too! not so suitable for mountaineering routes though, especially if you expect alot of ice (use a fig 8 then)

"Guide your climbing partner to Send-Town!" 04/05/13

The Black Diamond ATC Guide is seriously the best belay device! The grooves really help catch the rope, unlike simpler tubular belay devices. The ring on the back end makes top belaying possible for multi-pitch climbs, the main reason I got this. Yes, it's a little more expensive than other belay devices, but totally worth it if you want to keep your options open and not end up buying another belay device for another situation!

"If you had to have one belay device this would be it." 03/23/13

Burly and multifunctional is all you need to know about this device. Sure the reverso is lighter but will also wear out 3x as fast.If you had to just have one belay device this would be it.

"Good. but Petzl Reverso 4 looks nicer" 03/20/13

Very nice and light. But if you compare this with Petzl Reverso 4 size by side, the Reverso seems to have a better surface finish. I would go with Reverso if they are of same price

"work horse device" 02/22/13

I am a long-time user of the ATC, but upgrade to the Guide shortly after it came out. I use my current ATC Guide 2-4 days a week and it's still in holding up wearwise after a year plus. I have used it for free hanging raps with double-stranded lines down to 7mm without any problems. I prefer the Petzl Reverso for super long routes/approaches where I want to shave off weight, but on most days it's the Guide.

"Great ATC!" 01/23/13

Fantastic all-around belay device, nice and lightweight. The friction side puts a good hold on the rope and helps reduce slippage, while not being too rough to damage the rope. I haven't used the guide mode yet, but the helpful instructional video from the Black Diamond website makes it look pretty easy to use. I prefer this to the more common and basic ATC devices for the added function, with only slightly more weight.

"Great Belay device" 11/23/12

The friction is just right on this guy. The only weird thing is if you rappel on the teeth side there is a bit too much friction so you are supposed to flip it around when you rap so dont burn your fingers on your atc. I have forgot about that every time so it got really hot but I am sure that rappelling is great when you flip it. I went with the guide just in case I get into multi pitch climbing (which I am not) but it is not much more for it so I figured why not have that option.

"The best top belay device available." 11/19/12

IF you know what you're doing, you can switch from descending to ascending with this device with only the clip of one carabiner and the addition of a friction hitch. The thing that makes this better than its closest competitor is that it works with larger ropes (10mm+) rather well. Guide mode is easy to set up, but also easy to screw up if your rope isn't loaded correctly or if it's not oriented at the proper connection (hanging from the big ring). ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS pull test your rig before putting someone on belay. If you don't have one, get one. They're versatile, durable, and long-lasting.
