Kuhl is a German word, meaning exactly what it sounds like, cool. Originally started as a hat company in 1983, and under the name Alfwear, the brand was founded by John “Alf” Engwall, Conrad Ankur (the legendary mountaineer), and brothers Jay and Kevin Boyle, the four men dreamed of building a business that would both reflect their lifestyle and respective sports of skiing and climbing.
Now owned independently by Kevin Boyle, Kuhl has grown into more than a hat company. Kuhl now produces full lines of fleece jackets, softshell jackets, hiking pants and shorts, quick dry shirts, and many more styles of outer and active wear.
Designed for both performance and style, Kuhl apparel uses only the finest materials, such as organic cotton and Merino wool. Kuhl also creates their own technical fabrics, such as Alfpaca fleece, Kashmira™, KuhlTouch™, Technikore™, Aerosoft™, and Coffeenna™, a performance fabric made from coffee.
Along with technical fabrics, Kuhl also designs their performance wear with anatomically designed pants, shorts, jackets, and shirts for an ergonomic fit found in the Kuhl Crag series. Also found on Kuhl apparel is the original Kuhl thumb loops. And who doesn’t love thumb loops? My thumbs are actually looped as I write this. That last part may not be true, but I thought it might be a Kuhl thing to say. See what I did there?
