Let’s be honest, crampons have a silly name. Probably because there is no word that can match the badassness of having metal claws on your feet that make you an ice climbing machine. Crampons come in multiple styles, ranging from strap-on binding based systems, step in bindings or hybrid systems that fuse the other styles together. Their purposes range from walking to advanced mountaineering and each crampon has been designed to suit a specific need. It’s important to select a crampon that will work with your boots as well as with your intended trek.
As research, I wore crampons out on the town last weekend. They fit right in at my local punk rock show, however I had a hard time convincing the manager of the bowling alley that I wasn’t going to damage the lane. Turns out, the manager was right, so use your crampons as much as possible, but don’t take them bowling.
