The Yakima Mako Saddles turn your roof rack into a saddle-type kayak rack that cradles your kayak hull-side down. This Yakima rack accessory features form-fitting cradles that fit any hull shape, dynaflex pads that flex to grip the boat hull securely, and a tightening strap that gives you control over the grip on your kayak. A Yakima kayak rack makes it easy to load up and travel with your kayak so when you're sick of buildings, roads and people you can hit the water.
DECENT FEATURES of the Yakima Mako Saddles
- Mako pads protect the hull and Dynaflex grips provide a snug hold when you tighten the straps
- Padded buckle protects your boat and your vehicle
- Fit car rack systems with round and square crossbars
- Fits factory aerobars with the use of Universal Mighty Mounts sold seperately
- Integrated rubber pad in center of saddle allows kayak to slide when strap is loose, then grips hull securely when straps are tightened
- For use with plastic and composite hulls
- Mako Pads(8004027) add an extra layer of protection at contact points with boat to protect hull's finish (suggested for optimal protection of gel-coated composite hulls). The pads also allow for easier sliding of kayak into cradles
- Can be used in conjunction with Hully Roller

"Holds me new yak very well" 04/08/11
Got this because I got the girlfriend a yak for her birthday and obviously needed an additional yak holder. I have a BowDown so I knew I had room for this on my crossbars and decided to get two of the Mako Saddles because its going on a car and I don't need the roller bars in the rears since the yak will be loaded on the side. Once you get this thing adjusted to your hull it holds it extremely well. It also comes with felt pads so that you don't scratch your fiberglass yaks (if you have them). Overall if you have the room I would recommend two of these instead of my setup but I didn't have the room on my crossbar.
"Worth Every Penny" 07/04/10
Instead of getting a full Yakima rack and bars for my jeep, I opted for 2 pairs of Mako Saddles and some mighty mounts to fit my factory crossbars. I have traveled thousands of miles at interstate speeds and back country roads and my kayak has never moved an inch. However I was not a fan of the tightening straps and tie down straps. It seemed like they didn't bite enough when trying to tighten it down, so I just picked up some ratchet straps and I prefer those.
"Simply Superb.." 06/20/10
Bought to use on my fiberglass kayak, i needed smg that would cradle and protect my yak but would also grab hold of it not let go till i got to the river.. The saddles work great for this purpose.. my only complaint is tht r not compatible with the yakima lock cores but other than that they r hard to beat..
"Solid" 01/15/10
Got these after a set of the old style Hull Raisers failed on the highway in a bad thunderstorm. Kind of arse puckering when your yak is hanging down on the passengers side of your vehicle banging at 60mph in a torrential downpour on a multi-lane highway. Yakima was great, they warranteed it and offered to replace it with the new style Bowdown rack. There was no way my wife was going for another vertical style rack, so I opted for a pair of Mako Saddles and a set of Hully Rollers. Great setup if you don't need to carry multiple boats.
"These are great and worth the money." 05/23/08
These are awsome! I have no fear when flying down the road to my desired body of water with my kayak on top of my car. The boat stays in place and doesn't move. It's very secure. I'd recommend these to anyone wanting a good way to hold your boat down.
