The Men's Flash XR Jacket by Western Mountaineering. Looking for a lightweight down jacket with a little more water resistance? Our new Flash XR series jackets may be the perfect solution. Western Mountaineering has added zippered closures to the pockets, a hood adjustment strap, and used an exclusive new lightweight laminated shell fabric which provides an added measure of protection against moisture. The average weight of these jackets is only 11 ounces, yet it has a breathable water resistant shell fabric for better performance and a bit more durability. Zippered pockets have insulation on both sides and protective covers to keep water out when the pockets are closed. A small strap conveniently located behind the hood allows for easy fit adjustment and brings it closer to your head so that it won't block your line of sight each time you peer left or right. Also, this Western Mountaineering jacket is made right here, in the USA!

Very warm with a wide temperature rangeThe previous reviewer had a very different experience with this jacket. I am a female so that may or may not make a difference? I had this jacket on when I broke my femur 2.5 years ago. It saved my life! It kept me warm until search and rescue got to me. It kept me from going into shock and hypothermia immediately. I wore this jacket this winter (backcountry skiing) with a medium to heavy weight wool layer and a base layer all winter long. I live in Montana and we had a very cold winter. The XR without any added layers worked down to minus 5 degrees. I think this is the best all-around down jacket available.

Light-weight but not much warmthI have this and the down pants. I am disappointed because I paid so much to not feel that warm. These stuff down really small and appear to have a lot of loft. However, if there is even a slight breeze or if it's below 40, your teeth will be chattering in no time. Admittedly, I am just a rock climber, not a real mountaineer. I use these to hang out at night, and keeping warm in between bouldering. So, I'm not really using it for technical mountaineering. Perhaps if you're hiking 60 miles or alpine playing, this could be the sh*t. Just be sure to bring a shell because the material is thin. I got holes in it almost immediately.
