Tough, very waterproof , but...I have mixed feelings about these boots. ,,,,They're on the heavy side, but that is a trade off you make for durability and toughness on a long backpack trip. They can take a lot of abuse, and they've kept my feet dry in extremely wet conditions where the rest of my body was soaking wet. Great leather. ,,,,However, one of the upper grommets popped out, lost and never to be found again, which means I can't lace one boot all the way up. That happened shortly after i got them, even before i hiked, so i can only chalk that up to poor craftsmanship. These aren't bad boots, but Vasques have gone down in quality since I got my first pair and I will go with a different brand next time.

Bomb proof. No wear in time...Maybe I'm the exception. My boot has the toe-protector, which I actually really liked.,,,,But yeah, this boot has worked great. When looking for a boot, I probably tried on 10 pairs and returned 2 pairs. Once I tried this baby out, my never-ending journey of boot-searching was finally finished. Because of my lack of decision, I only had 2 weeks to break them in. And when I say breaking them in, I say that lightly. I'm a grad student and so my break-in period consisted of me studying at my desk and walking from my car to my class. After my 4 day hiking trip, I only had one blister on the inner pad of my foot. ,,,,So yeah, I thought they performed great.

6 Years of Heavy use.I have had these boots for 6+ years. They have been used for backpacking in the ADKs and Catskills several times a year and also for year round field work as a wildlife technician. If you want a pair of boots that lasts and will be as comfortable as the day you got them, then these are it. Worth every penny. Mine are so worn that the souls are almost treadles and the leather is worn thin, but they still fit better and feel better than 3 other cheap pairs I have tried. I am currently saving for a new pair because I will never ware another pair of boots after these. 100% recommend to anyone backpacking or hiking or working outside.

Taken me around the worldI purchased these boots back in 2011 (or a pair closely resembling), and I have been beyond happy with my purchase. These boots have taken me to very rugged terrain in Central and South America, for months of abuse in streams, thick mud and rocks; they are still going strong. Along side their durability, they are remarkably comfortable. While it takes a bit to wear them in, these feel like an extension to my body now.
The only "problem" is that one of the metal eyelets have snapped off halfway down the boot. Not a problem at all, and understandable for what they've been through. I'd hate to see these boots go, but I'll be sure to buy a new pair from here when that happens.

A Solid HikerFor about two years now, I've worked for Red Wing Shoe Co., and I've gotten familiar with literally hundreds of different boots, including many hikers. The Summit is, as a boot, one of the better hiking boots I've ever put on my feet. The leather is tough, yet supple, and the Gore-Tex liner does exactly what it needs to. The only issue that I had was the sole. Excellent grip and stability, but I found that after only a few ascents up some of Colorado's larger mountains, the rubber compound had begun to breakdown and fall apart. That being said, as a hiking boot for less rocky terrain, it's a wonderful boot.

Good shoes for all purposeowned these about a year now and have used them in the desert in Nevada, the mud of Florida, and the snow in the Dakotas. Use them both for backpacking and for casual wear, using Superfeet green insoles. I Sno Seal them every three months since I'm really hard on them. I wish they had a rubber toe cap as mine have gotten scratched up a bit on rocks, but otherwise I have no complaints. With the Sno Seal I've been out in snow for 6 hours and my feet stayed dry. Around town they're as comfortable as a pair of boots can be. With care they should last years. They are a bit heavy but, hey, they're boots. ,,

Second time is indeed a charmThe first pair unfortunately had a hook pull loose, but the second pair has been great. After Hundreds of miles they are finally starting to break in. Hey lets face it, these boots are going to last me a very very long time. Some people complained of squeaking, but I like it. Sounds like a saddle. I went through the Beartooth Mountains this last summer with 50 pounds on my back. The boots kept me from twisting an ankle a number of times. They gave me grip on rock, dirt, and mud. My feet stayed very nicely dry. They are a bit heavy, but that was the price I wanted to pay for stability of my ankle.
I also have an issue with Plantar Facitiis, the boot soles supported the foot perfectly.

Seriously durableI have backpacked all over west TX, Arizona, and New Mexico in these boots. They handle snowshoe duty pretty well, have been polished and worn to work with business attire (maybe a little dorky), and have lasted a long time. My favorite thing about these boots are the absence of seams along the sides of the boot. Always the number one thing to rip and need constant shoe-goo in all of my previous hiking boots. As long as they continue to make these, these boots will be the only hikers I will ever wear. Oh yeah, the GTX rocks and is waterproof after 3 years.
