Tenaya's Tatanka looks benign enough: comfy uppers, a plush tongue, and a gentle downturned last. But when I strapped it onto my foot, the delicate lace-up turned into a powerful beast of a shoe, bearing down hard on small scoops and edges with precision.I started using the Tatankas in the Red River Gorge, where I appreciated their mildly aggressive toe box and snug heel powering out steep waves of sandstone. I recently took them out to Eldo to test them on spicy face climbing, and I liked them even more. The Tatanka has a nice strong edge to stand on yet inspires confidence on delicate smears. They size similarly to the Muiras but have a more symmetrical toe and slimmer heel.
These shoes fit my feet like a glove, and are excellent for steep terrain requiring a shoe with a powerful toe. The quick lace system makes on/off almost as fast as a Velcro shoe.
The neoprene tongue and lacing system make this shoe really comfortable. Its pretty soft and asymmetrical, which makes it great for toe-ing in on steep terrain, and in a bigger size would probably be a great trad shoe, simply because of the comfort. They come with extra laces, too, which is nice. If you like a sensitive shoe, the Tatanka is hard to beat.
