The Pyramid Belay Device by Trango could be the best all around belay/rappel device on the planet. The result of intensive R and D work, it is light, compact, durable and can smoothly handle just about any rope combination.

The machined cooling fins on the Pyramid work both to keep it cool and to make it less droppable, and the pivoting center pin lets you flip it over to customize the feed of your ropes without effecting its stopping power.

Rappelling is always controlled and jerk-free and the flat rope path virtually eliminates kinks. The elongated slot for the center pin makes it easy to rig the Pyramid with stiff or fat ropes and the burly retaining cable will last as long as you own it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works ok, but there are better choices. If this is all you've got around, it's a decent belay device. I'd definitely pick this over a Figure 8 or something. However, I've found the BD ATC to be a better belay device for the same price range. Handling rope on the ATC is much smoother than with the Pyramid, and the way the Pyramid can spin around has always annoyed me, and led me to load my rope in with the Pyramid upside-down a few times, making it rather difficult to belay with. And being a pretty no-frills belay device, like the ATC, there is the issue that for just a few dollars more, you can get a much more robust belay device, like the Reverso or ATC-Guide.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I like it, but there are better options This is the first belay device I ever used. I really like it's simple design and the ease of ropes sliding through it. It can handle a wide variety of rope widths and due to it's simplicity, messing up with this guy is tough. What I don't like about it however is also that it lacks many of the other features that modern-day belay devices have such as a hole for clipping biners to for top-rope belaying. It's lightweight and simple, but in the end there are better options out there for more varied types of climbing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the money. I have had mine for many years. I just recently started to use it lead clinbing. It has never let me down. Smooth, lightweight, and easy to use. Complaints Not enough friction for working a route. So if you plan on working a route, use something else. If you are going to just rapel or belay, it is just great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEtter than an ATC I have a friend who owns one of these, and I've belayed with it a time or two and I must say, I'm impressed. the Pyramid shines above the ATC in that it is smooth, cunducts heat well, it locks off easier, and it looks legit! also, the option to flip it around for less friction is a nice feature as well.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works, but not always the best. Works okay as an ATC, but can lock up on the rope if you are not careful. Also, tends to lock up when used as a rappelling device. Works well with small rope 10.5-10.6 mm, but not 11mm static. Depending on what you will use it for, you might want to buy another ATC device.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would reccomend this belay device to anyone sick of getting pinched, fingers or rope! I just used this belay device and it is one of the smoothest ones I have ever used. It doesn't bind up or pinch the rope too much like many of the other ones, plus its grey metal so when you use it, you look rugged and cool at the same time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cool name and it works well. I like the cooling fins on this device. I Lost my lowe tuber and this was the closest design I could find to replace it. It works well on rapels, but could use a little more friction for belays.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite belay device I love this thing, the rope glides through it with little hinderance and I feel quite safe. There is a reason they are always in a state of limited stock.
