Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Trusty Classic My Ridgerest has held up through the years and is lightweight and easy to pack! Whether your going hiking or backyard camping, this extremely low maintenance sleeping pad is a great addition to your camping gear. With this pad, you don't have to worry giving it a little abuse in the trail because you know it will hold up to whatever is thrown its way. I have used this pad in a number of different situations, such as a dry place to sit when the ground is wet, under my sleeping bag in a tent, and under a sleeping bag in a hammock and it has exceeded my expectations for performance in every situation. This pad has always cut the chill of cold ground or air beneath me. I highly recommend this product for anyone who wants a no-hassle, trustworthy sleeping pad.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Basic Sleeping Pad This is a great sleeping pad with no frills. It's slightly more expensive than the ubiquitous, dirt-cheap blue foam pads, but much warmer. (Really, I've never seen one of those blue pads rated). The ridges do seem to allow more warmth (via trapping air) than flat-top pads that I've had. It does consume much more space than a inflatable and is less cushy, but you don't have to worry about it going flat (and, let's face it: it's much cheaper). For the weight and money, this is the best! If you really need something thicker, consider an inflatable - although, honestly, I'd just recommend getting two of these!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Basic I have used a ridge rest for many years of backpacking. It has always kept me warm and fairly comfortable. As I get older, and my back gets worse, it is more important to "contour" the ground with a hole for my butt. It is a long night if I don't get it right. Also, I have a large pack and put everything inside the bag, so nothing can drop off during a bushwack. The pad makes a cylinder on the inside of the bag, and everything goes inside it. Protects the pack material from sharp objects also.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tough! But... I have had 2 of these since the 90's. They have been packed, squeezed, jammed, bent and lugged around for years. For all that they only show a few fray marks and some small chips out of the foam. Absolutely tough, no question about it. A 12/10 in the durability dept. However in the comfort department, it is a half inch of foam. It is never going to be comfortable. It does take some of the sting out of small rocks, roots and ground lumps. It does block cold to about near freezing. Below that cold will still come through. I use it for day trips and overnights. When you think about it you will proabably spend 8 - 10 hours on it, either sleeping or lounging around your camp. That is a big chunk out of your day. You may as well be comfortable. If I have to spend multiple nights out I take a real mattress. A great mattress for certain purposes.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Spend your money on something more expensive Food, sex and air are important. So is sleep. So don't spend $20 on a mattress and think you're going to be happy. I like a firm bed, so I thought I'd be happy with the Therm-A-Rest sleeping pad....and I was...in my house....on a carpet. But on the Appalachian Trail, on rocks and sticks...uh.uh. Spend the money and buy yourself something like a NEMO that has the inflation device built into the pad. BTW -- it's not Moosejaw's fault that I was an idiot when I bought the bulky, hard to tote, takes up 3/4 of your backpack sleeping pad. Moosejaw is great!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome and the original I have had one of these for what seems like decades. Its a great option for car camping. does what it is supposed to do, insulate you from the ground and provide a little cushion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great budget, lightweight sleeping solution I bought my basic RidgeRest over twenty years ago and I'm still using it. I realise that these days there are many more technical sleeping solutions however I still love my old ridge rest and it's been on all of my camping adventures. These days, due to older bones, I sometimes will add an inflated mattress over the RidgeRest when car camping however when carrying my camping gear on my back I use the RidgeRest on it's own due to it's light weight. I know that newer mats may be lighter however I already own this so I'm happy to continue to use it. There's nothing to go wrong with the RidgeRest, it won't spring a leak, it's waterproof and can take a beating. It's a little bulky however it fits easily tied either under or over my backpack and provides welcome insulation and cushioning. Of course, it also makes for a really comfy sit mat and I still use it with my old chair kit when car camping.
