After a long hike, no one wants to lay down on a camper mat that feels like you're basically sleeping on cardboard. But no one can take a big blowup mattress into the woods when you need every ounce of wait. the Therm-a-rest meets you in the middle with a every compact but extremely comfortable camping mattress. I've used it on long weekend trips in the Ozarks of Arkansas and have been extremely satisfied with my night of sleep on this mattress. I would not buy anything else!
"A Good Lay, Makes Little Noise, Small Package"
After using a foam pad I was looking for another option. It had to be durable, lightweight, compact and comfortable. The Therm-A-Rest NeoAir Camper Mattress fits those requirements. I purchased the regular size and it’s long enough for me (5’9) and would serve someone taller. I’m not a heavy guy (140) but I think this pad will work well for larger guys. I didn’t fall off the side and for me I was able to sleep on my side comfortably. I like the air valve because it can be easily reached while lying down and you can let air out for comfort level. Unlike other pads, this pad doesn’t make noise when you move. It rolls up very small/easily and fits well in my pack or bicycle panniers. It’s not the lightest pad out there, but it’s definitely the strongest and most comfortable. This pad will definitely help you enjoy the next day. The only negative: it makes waking difficult and you often wish for a rainy day in the tent with it. Check out OutdoorGearLab for great video reviews.
"Packs light, easy to inflate and deflate"
For the fear of the winter last year, i bought a couple of these to use in conjunction with the big agnes king solomon sleeping bag. But well, my room heater stayed intact and we never did use the twin sleeping bag. However, we managed to put the sleeping pads to great use anyway. Brought these out to Coachella music festival this year, and we slept like babies in our tent. It helped retain warmth which would otherwise be lost through the ground. Easy to inflate and deflate when you wish to pack up. Best thing is they packed up nicely into bundles which you can simply throw into our backpack. I reckon you could travel the world with this, and sleep anywhere you please. So comfortable. Also, non-squeaky as some might say, and also of pretty durable material, at least IMHO.
After several hundred nights spent on the ground i thought i would never need anything like this, but then again i have no need for an lifted 4wd that has as much money sunk into it as a lot of new cars. But i really like my jeep, and everyone else had one so i had to get one too. Same with this. All the guys in my backpacking group had them and were ready to jump out of their tents in the morning right at wake-up time, while i was grumbling about being stiff. So like the jeep thing i decided to jump on the bandwagon and will not look back. It is a tad noisy(a little crinkly) but not bad, and it doesn't squeak or squeal as you move around on it which are unacceptable. Not difficult to blow up or pack back down, and light enough that i won't complain about it in my pack. And it definitely makes sleeping on sub freezing ground a lot better. Oh yeah, it is comfortable too
"Durable, lightweight, just a little LOUD"
I bought one of the original NeoAir mattresses that needed repair. I sealed up the two holes that had punctured it and since then have used it hiking for 2 months on the AT without any problems and continue to use it 4 years after my AT trip and it still works fine.Amazingly I haven't had to repair it since I got it and being a lightweight backpacker I don't put it in any kind of storage sack and to deflate it I literally sit on it (which everyone else says I shouldn't do because it's likely to put holes in it). And it's still perfectly fine! The only concern I have is the material is LOUD particularly when you have to move around everyone else around you will hear you move! But considering the minimum weight and durability, it's worth waking up your neighbors once in a while! I refuse to buy any other brand of sleeping pads!
This pad has it all. It was warm, quiet, packs to about the size of a cars air filter, light, and super comfortable. The only down side is it takes 20-30 full breaths to fill it up, so after a long day of hiking, it may cause you to pass out. Just kidding, space out the breaths and you'll be fine.
I was torn between the xlite and the camper version from Therm-a-rest. I tried out both and although the xlite is lighter, it is noisy and I kept rolling off. I tried out the camper and I love this sleeping pad. Although I take a 1 lb hit, this is a comfortable pad. I fully inflated the pad and then laid on it and let out some of the air. This allowed more contour for my back which was awesome. I still didn't touch the ground either. I was stuck in my tent for a day and rolled on and abused this sleeping pad. Not even worried about puncturing it. It is tough.
I had two back surgeries at the young age of 19, I thought my days of backpacking was over! Turned out I was just get started with the Therm-A-Rest mattress its like waking up and not even knowing that your sleeping on the grown.
"If you're sleeping on the ground, ya need one. If you're sleeping on a cot, you're going 2 want one"
I currently own the Thermarest Luxury Map and the Thermarest Ultralite Cot. Unfortunately my boyfriend and I alternate sleeping on the cot and sleeping on the Luxury Map when we go camping. After a two night stint on the cot I decided I needed some cushioning for my weary bones. This mattress works great on my cot and gives me the extra cushion I need for a great nights sleep. I do wish this mattress had the self inflating capabilities the Luxury Map has but I'm sure my lungs could use the workout anyway. Buy one!
