The North Face Surge II is a 32 liter school backpack for packing your books and binders from class to class. The Surge II features a dedicated 17 inch laptop sleeve, padded for protection against the cramped hallways between classes. The main section zippers in texts, binders, lunch and a hoodie. Everyone knows Mr. Smith's classroom is always freezing. The secondary zipper has slots for writing utensils, calculator, and various small items. The two vertical pockets stash headphones and power cords while the top stash pocket is tricot lined for soft protection of your sunglasses or smartphone. Don't let Mrs. Rutabaga catch you texting, you'll be phoneless for a whole year. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable and spacious First off, this pack has lots of pockets. The one closest to your back can hold up to a 17 inch laptop and a 15 inch with ease. The second (the largest) pocket holds a down jacket, plus a rain jacket and a multitude of items. The third pocket, though not as large, is equally as important, carrying a GPS, Compass, map, etc. One pocket on the bottom holds an ultralite jacket or rain cover, the water bottle pockets hold water bottles plus non-important items. This pack is built like a tank. The high denier materials are bomber and withstand sil-nylon tearing branches, loose pencils on the inside poking at the exterior and such things.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome bag I mainly picked out this bag because of the dedicated laptop compartment, the daisy chain to clip on a bunch of gear, and the easily-accessible, lined top pocket. I also appreciate the fact that they put a stretchy, zippered compartment on the side of the bag where another bottle holder would normally be found. I mean, how often are you really carrying around two bottles? I don't see myself using the waist straps and I like the fact that they can be tucked away behind the back panel padding. Tons of storage on the inside and has cushioning on the bottom of the laptop compartment to absorb any shock when you drop your bag on the ground. Very well designed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must have! It easily fits my Dell Studio XPS 16 in the laptop compartment. There is another large pocket which can hold several books at a time. There is also a rather large pocket that is divided which is good for holding small electronics and pens and pencils and other smaller items. I also have used it in the Adirondacks. I climbed up 4 of the high peaks and had no problems whatsoever. But, one is that there is no designated hole for the hose of a hydration bladder, not a big deal. The other is that the water bottle holders do not hold the wide-mouth 32 oz Nalgene bottles. I use it almost everyday and it seems very durable and reliable and I would highly recommend it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best backpack ever I bought the Surge II about a month ago, and so far it has been excellent. I was searching for the hugest backpack I could find that would still look nice, and this one has worked out perfectly. It fits all of school stuff, which usually consists of 2 large textbooks, 5 smaller books, 4 notebooks, my 13" Mac in a case, food, water bottle, keys, money, first aid kit, stress ball, extra socks, etc. The middle pocket has a really convenient pen/pencil/marker organizer, and I really like the nice little small pocket at the top for my phone and chapstick. Even though it's heavy with all that stuff, it doesn't hurt to carry around all day. It's pretty much the best backpack ever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Backpack from North Face I purchased one of these in Cosmic Blue, and overall I was very happy with it. The shoulder straps are very comfortable and ensure good weight distribution of the pack, no matter what you might have in it. It offers a variety of different pockets for organization and will hold your laptop safely and securely as well. My favorite is the mini pocket at the top of the pack that works great for holding earbuds and a USB charger. I used this for several months for a weekend pack but decided it wasn't quite big enough for as much traveling as I like to do, so I ultimately upgraded to the Router. If you're looking for a great all-around backpack though, this comes highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plethora of Pockets! As a college student, I hate having to look for sturdy bags at discount stores - none of them last, none of them are designed for having to carry your books on your back for 12 hour days. This one is. The quality is typical North Face - outstanding. They've thought of everything - there's a laptop compartment, beau coup book room in another section, and a third section that's compartmentalized for pens, phone, etc. The sternum strap is adjustable; important for a female. The back is ventilated and padded, and the shoulder straps are heavy-duty. I am incredibly pleased with this bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bag for daily use and to bring on a trip This bag has achieved legendary status among travelers and in the EDC world. For anyone looking for an awesome bag that is well organized and fits in everywhere, this can't be beat.,,,,The material is great; the zippers strong and smooth and the organization perfect for daily use. I like the separate compartment for my laptop -- keeping it safely away from all of the other stuff in my bag.,,,,This bag is the smaller brother to the equally awesome North Face Router. The style and design are similar but the Surge is 32 liters vs. 41 for the Router. For day to day, most people will probably find the Surge to be the better size; for a trip or long weekend, the Router will be great because of the extra capacity.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well built Product. Lots of storage. Great Carry-on. Chose this over the North Face big shot II. More compartments and only one water bottle holder, who needs two, really. Other side has extra small pocket. Sunglasses pocket on top is felt lined and a nice touch. Inside the first flap is a clip for keys, a mesh pocket with zipper, and another pocket flap with Velcro closure . Web rings on the front make it easy to quickly grab. Could see using those to clip on extra items, e.g., muddy shoes. Top handle seems real strong and should hold up. Daughter had to have one as well for our flight. Expensive but she should be able to use this for years including college. Like having a backpack instead of a roll-on for air travel. Once it situated on your back you forget its there.
