Rock Solid - Great for School or TravelThe surge has tons of convenient pockets, dual water bottle holders, chest and compression straps, big main compartment, and the separate laptop compartment. Right underneath the top flap is a padded pocket that protects phones, mp3 players, etc well. Because it has vertical columns of padding between the laptop and main compartments, the laptop is safe no matter what you have in the main compartment. For some uses the main compartment could be a little larger, but the size contribues to its slim, well fitting profile. It's water resistant to a degree. In two years of schlepping textbooks all over campus, mine shows no sign of wear or distress. Rock Solid

Can I marry a backpack? No seriously. I'm in love with the Surge.Ok, so as a junior in high school I have a ton of stuff. Yes stuff, like the "I'm a daughter of an eagle scout who raised me on the Be Prepared philosophy" kind of stuff. The surge is my everything backpack, literally. From my calculator & trail running shoes to my MacBook Pro & AP US History binder, this backpack has a place for EVERYTHING! It has so many pockets. (I would count them, but at the moment I'm feeling lazy.) It has the computer pocket that is so good it makes me want to ditch my current bulky case/cover. It even has a dandy little whistle attached to the chest strap buckle. If you are half-way considering it - BUY IT! You won't be disappointed! (:

The perfect School Backpack!!This could be one of the best back packs I've ever owned! I have the tnf and gray color and it deff stands out, everyone asks me where I got it from. This pack is made extremely well and is very durable. It is also indorced by the american calpractic association and does not hurt my back at all when it is loaded down and i have to go all across campus. I also like the fact that it has its own separate zipper compartment for your laptop. One last cool thing about the bag is the zipper compartment at the bottom I've found that it is perfect for putting a rain coat in so that u will never get wet if it rains, and because it is in the bottom it doesn't take up space in the rest of the bag.

Need a pocket? How about 20?I bought this backpack after my last Northface died on me. I was going for something with a few more bells and whistles and boy did I get it! The Surge has more pockets (including interior organizer pockets and no mesh water bottle holders - hate those) and straps than I know what to do with (read that as a pro or a con, your choice). I'm not a huge fan of the double zipper/clip compartment on the very front (haven't figured out what it's good for), but other than that, It's great! Sizing works out fine for me, I'm a petite female grad student and bought the male model because of the colors.

Too much bag, too little stuffI bought this bag here about a year ago because everyone was raving about it. I needed a bag to take around Africa for work that had a laptop pocket. There are a number of good things about the bag - like my other NF gear, it is really well built and has a lot of features and the laptop pocket is great. However, I'm constantly on small planes and in tight spaces and it just doesn't hold that much stuff for how big the bag is. Seems great for some people, but I just wanted to write a review for those people that are looking for a decent sized bag that can that haul a lot of gear in the smallest space possible. If you're a minimalist or worry about size or space this isn't the bag for you.

Super Awesome and Perfect for CollegeI got this backpack for college and couldn't be happier! The North Face is a really great brand that make high quality products so I knew it would be worth the price for a backpack that would last many years. The pack itself is great with tons of pockets and a special padded pocket for your laptop right against your back. The straps are very comfortable and don't rub my neck like other bags do. Finally, I love the design because it keeps everything snug to your back and secure especially with the chest strap. All in all, a GREAT backpack that is perfect for school and weekend trips.

Great for work, travel, school, hiking....I have had this backpack for about a month now. I absolutely love it and have already used it for a couple of trips. It holds my large laptop safely, in addition to my DSLR, books, pens, papers, small electronics and more. Mine is black and I bring it to work all of the time. It looks great even when I am dressed professionally and commuting to work. On top of it all, this backpack is so comfortable to wear for extended periods, even when weighed down with all of my stuff! The chest and waist support straps really help out when you use them. Everything is balanced perfectly.

Versatile, Durable, and Surge-icalThat last descriptor doesn't make sense, but at least it's fitting when you say it out loud... ,,,,Anyway, I'm now going onto my second year with this backpack. My normal load consists of my laptop, power cord, 2 to 3 textbooks, an umbrella, water bottle, and tons of other college-y items. Aside from some mud gathered during my mountain biking trips, it looks like it was purchased yesterday. All of my former backpacks had torn at the strap-backplate interface. I'm glad to say this one is as well constructed as I had hoped.
