FlexVent injection molded shoulder straps with additional PE foam provide an enormous amount of comfort, and the padded Airmesh back panel adds even more comfort. The large main compartment on this impressive 29-liter capacity North Face pack includes a laptop sleeve, organization, and hydration port. A secondary compartment features organization as well. A large and small pocket on the front means there's added space for the little items you don't want to misplace. Mesh side pockets are included as well. That's a lot of stuff. I told you it's ready.

"Wonderful for daily use or day trips and hiking"
I take this backpack everywhere I go. It is great for lugging books to class during the week and wonderful while hiking or backpacking. It has plenty of room to store what you need and isn't too heavy. The straps are comfortable and this pack has great back support. Definitely would purchase again.
To start off, I have to say that the Recon is the BEST backpack I have ever owned. My first Recon lasted me through 4 years of high school and 4 years of college. It is perfect for holding a laptop/tablet, textbooks, notebooks, binders, and snacks! The padding on this backpack is amazing and makes 10 lbs of content feel more like 5 lbs. The straps on this backpack are very supporting, and all in all, the craftsmanship of this backpack is made to last. If not for someone breaking into my car and stealing my Recon, I would still be using it right now. Due to my excellent experience with the Recon, I ended up purchasing another one a few days ago. Surprisingly, the support given and the materials used are even better than my original Recon! The coffee brown color is beautiful! I've had such good experiences with my NF backpacks that I also ordered the Surge 2!!Love NF backpacks. Comfortable, provides much support, holds a lot of content, and looks very stylish!
The product is very nice, fits well, and durable. Its spacious enough for all my supplies and school work. I had the jester backpack before but this has much more room for everything. Great backpack and will definitely be using this for many years.
I've always loved the Recon. In fact, I own two, but I wanted a new color so I ordered a 2013 model. Much remains the same from the previous version but there are some tweaks that make this version somewhat of a disappointment. First, TNF has made the top grab handle so narrow that it is uncomfortable if not unusable. Second, the zippers seemed much stickier than on previous versions. Anyone who loves backpacks knows how important a seemingly silly quality such as smoothness of zipper can be. The zipper closure on the front stash pocket in particular seems to have been straightened out. I returned the one I ordered because I didn't like the flashlight green/sage green combo. The flashlight green is sufficiently bright as to warrant only a front panel with a black back like the asphalt/TNF red. It's still a great bag.
"Durable, comfortable, backpack with more pockets than you can shake a stick at"
While I use this mostly for school, it's also perfect for the quick day trip or weekend getaway if you skip the unnecessary items like fresh underwear. The pockets are huge and there are many storage compartments to keep things well organized. The laptop protection pocket is nice, but a little small for a larger 17" laptop, anything smaller would fit perfectly. The side pockets are nice and tight, with an additional strap to really keep that water bottle in there.I'm not sure if the bottom waist strap detaches, but if not, it would be nice, in case you're doing stuff that doesn't require that level of secureness.Overall a great backpack.
The pockets and compartments make this able to carry a lot and very versatile. The straps are extremely comfortable, and the padded pocket is great for a laptop. Two water bottle pockets on the side and a slot for a hydration bladder hose make this great for light hiking. I just bought the third one being used one of my family members. They all love them, and it's their favorite of all packs they have owned to date.
Since I was little I have loved buying new backpacks and bought one or more each school year until my freshman year of college when I found this gem. I haven't bought a new one since (4 years later) and I've used it for everything from a heavy course load at school, to traveling (by car, bus, or plane) and I've used it on my bike to just cart stuff around. It keeps things dry, protects my MacBook and my iPad and allows me enough space to hold all my chargers, as well as many other things I'm sure I don't need but I have the space (so why not fill it, right?). This backpack is amazing and I doubt I'll ever buy anything else.
This pack is my favorite! There's enough room and pockets that if you can't fit what you need in here, you probably don't need to take it. The pack is great for full day-hiking and even carries enough for off-trail stays; it's not a framed pack for extended travel but anything less, this is perfect. I won't repeat all the kudos from previous reports but suffice it to say I carry full emergency gear, extra clothing (layer/rain), water purification, shelter packs, minimal fishing equipment, and more. Put a water bottle in one of the two side pouches and head out!
