The Men's Paramount Peak Convertible Pant by The North Face or the cool kids say TNF. Updated, these are TNF's or The North Face's best-selling convertible pants, featuring modernized lines, bluesign fabric (socially responsible manufacturing processes), extra carrying capacity and improved durability. Perfect for day hikes, globetrotting, or just touring the Forest Preserve, these pants have an UPF of 30, DWR finish- water repellency, quick drying, partial elastic waist with belt loops, zip-fly, and a built in belt. Convertible into 10" shorts, with color coded leg zips, and secure zip pocket near the right hand pocket for all your hiding needs. These pants remind of the one time I wanted to hike the Grand Canyon, but I couldn't because our tour bus was leaving, or something worthless. I don't know, but the pockets on these guys are really classy. North Face made these out of 100% nylon faille fabric.

"Fantastic Hiking Pants...everything you want"
These are great pants. Sizing is fairly accurate. I'm 5'10 and 180 lbs, and I got a L-Short. I normally wear 34" jeans and slacks, and these fit almost perfectly. If you're any taller than me, you probably want the regular.
"Just as fun and cool as a convertible car"
Great item to have for your next backpacking trip. The material is very sturdy and has a great texture. Didn't seem to hold the stink of a multi day trip, not sure at least I couldn't smell it... So they dry fast, maybe in like an hour after a dunk in a stream to clean. The leg opening isn't big enough to get over my boots, but the legs are light enough that I just let them scrunch up on my boot; kind of made a makeshift gator? The color coding for the legs is very helpful, not a feature to be overlooked.
I've been using these pants for about a year now. I have taken them on several backpacking trips. The pants have cargo pockets, zip off legs and an attached belt. They aren't water proof, but are water resistant and seem to do a pretty good job. I have hiked in the rain a few times with these and they never got soaked. They are pretty durable pants. I have given these pants a beating over the last year with mud, dirt, rock, you name it. Throwing them in the washer after a trip makes them look brand new. Great pants for general hiking and backpacking!
"These are the best pants-zipper-to-shorts of have ever had!"
I got these North Face Paramount Peak convertible pants this spring before I went with Cub Scouts to D-bar-A and with Boys Scouts to Cole Canoe Base. I could live in these pants/shorts as they are most comfortable & most versatile hiking bottoms that I have ever owned. The zippers on the legs are color coordinated (blue & red) so you cannot try to attach the wrong leg to the wrong side of the shorts. Now I have to get a Grey pair as well because I love them so much, I will need a second pair for when we go adventure traveling. Thanks MJ!
"Good design and construction, but runs small"
I looked around for quite a while before settling on these NF pants to replace a very old pair that finally dies. The mid weight material is solid, construction and seams are good quality, and the design looks good enough that you can wear them around town as well as on the trail. The thing that sold me is the pocket design which, for most competing brands, is awful -- guaranteed to let everything slide out of your pockets while you're sitting on a bus, or too small or inconvenient to hold anything. These are great, good capacity with thoughtfully designed closures and liners that keep your stuff with you even on a long trip. The only caution is that they run small -- both in length and girth -- so check the NF sizing guide carefully before you buy. I went through several exchanges and ended up going an extra size in both directions.
I section hiked Virginia in these pants, and they were great. They kept me warm, and quick to dry. Also a nice fit on me. I'm 5'11, 165 pounds, and the M fit perfectly. My friend saw me wearing them, and he said he also had a pair which he used in Peru. Also mentioned how well these pants dry.
The pant is very lightweight and feels durable. It is made of pure nylon but still very comfortable to wear (compared with cotton pants). The only complain is that it is too long for me (I am 5'11 and bought a medium regular. Maybe a medium short is better).
I've had these pants for over a year, lost some weight and had to order a smaller size to keep them from following off of me. I'm tough on gear and these pants have held up to the test of time. The zip pocket is effiecient but the 2 hip pockets are a little big. That is the only negative I have found. They fit well, allow for ample movement while hiking or climbing during almost any season. They aren't great in the summer because they are a little heavy/thick for warmer temperatures, however, the pants are perfect for fall, spring or winter camping. I recommend me these pants for any fall, spring or winter hiking or climbing.
I tried on a lot of different pants before deciding on these. I knew from the first time I put them on I wasn't going to find anything better and I never did. The first time I hiked in them I crossed a creed and didn't even have to roll up the pant legs cause they shed water like duck.
