"Does what it is supposed too" 02/17/12
I have had this bag for about a year now and I love it. I use it mainly for school, but also for frequent day hikes, a small travel bag for clothes, even climbed with it once; its very versatile. The bag is very light. There is a multitude of straps so you can compress the bag very thin and hold it securely to your body. The straps tuck away easily too. It could use a big zippered pocket in the smaller front compartment and a bigger/more secure pocket on the side (it doesn't fit a nalgene in it). The built in rain cover is sweet though. All in all thumbs up.
"Shoulder straps are too thin!" 02/08/12
I use this as a school backpack. Great laptop sleeve, fits my 15 inch laptop great, and protects it from impact at the bottom. The side water bottle pockets aren't quite big or tall enough, and I feel like my stuff is going to fall out. A bit too small for all my textbooks.Biggest complaint is that the shoulder straps are too thin, almost no padding at all, so heavy loads cut into your shoulders. Don't get sucked into buying a North Face just because everyone else has one.
"shoulder straps too thin" 02/08/12
I got this pack as school bag. It handles my 15 inch computer perfectly, and even has a nice buffer cushion on the bottom so if you slam your bag down the laptop doesn't take the hit. The elastic bottle holders make me feel like the stuff is going to fall out. The front elastic compartment is basically useless because anything you put in there takes up space in the inside compartments. I like the bungee things. But my main complaint is that the shoulder straps are too thin!! they kind of cut into your shoulders. As a school bag this pack is actually a bit small. Overall a good pack, but I probably won't go with NorthFace next time. You pay for the brand, try something better.
"I wanted to love it so badly... but my laptop didn't." 06/27/10
I bought this backpack today at a local sporting goods store (which will remain anonymous). I was looking for a decent all-purpose backpack. Primarily a school backpack. Somehow, I got talked into this one. First off, I would not recommend this as a laptop backpack. I have a 14" screen, and it fit but wasn't protected as well as I had hoped. Of course I don't think it's specifically for a laptop. But I was determined to make it work because it is so darn good looking. I'm sure it is a fantastic backpack for other purposes. I decided that I'm going to return it to the store and buy something awesome from Moosejaw instead. Which is what I should have done in the first place...
"LOVE THIS BAG!" 10/11/09
I don't do a lot of hiking (or any hiking...) but I am an engineering student who crams this bag so full that the zipper barely zips. And I love it! A huge laptop pocket in the main compartment and a bunch of mini pockets in the top of the smaller compartment. The straps are super-cushy and the rain cover, though dorky-looking, will keep your stuff dry while you're hiking (or running back from class without an umbrella...). Also has two water bottle pockets. The only thing I do not like is the flat pocket on the front. I have not found it to be good for anything, but other people might find a use. The blue is a really nice color for either gender.
"Great Bag, Multiple Uses." 04/08/09
I bought this looking for something more than the typical backpack with padded laptop compartment, but not really an avid hiker/etc. I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised by the features. I was initially concerned that it would be too large, but not the case. The best part is that the hipbelt easily tucks into the bag and does cause a bulge on the lower portion of the pack.
