Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smaller, lighter, faster, better The SteriPEN Adventurer Opti is a backpacker's dream. It's small, and that helps when you are packing one or two weeks worth of supplies into your pack. It's dependable because it kills EVERYTHING in the water. You really shouldn't worry much if you are using the SteriPEN for your water treatment needs.,,,,The only cons that I would mention is that it is battery operated (C123 to be specific, a little hard to find, try online) and that it does not filter particulates. I just bring a bandana or coffee filters with me to filter out any chunks or particulates found in water. Other than that, the SteriPEN is a beauty in the backcountry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Used without fail for 4 years I have the original version of this pen. Black and yellow, with the opaque black cap. Absolutely love it, with no problems whatsoever. I consider myself a lightweight packer, but not to the point where I'm cutting off toothbrush handles and product tags. The Steripen is perfect. No matter how full my pack is, there is ALWAYS room to slide it in somewhere. A set of lithium CR123s typically last about 75 treatments. Although I always carry an extra set of batteries and some treatment tablets, I've never actually had to use either. I was worried about taking what was basically a lightbulb into the backcountry, but the cap fits well and is very protective.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Backpacker's Dream!!! As a backpacker who constantly over-weights my pack, I am always looking for ways to trim ounces (after all, ounces=pounds=pain!!). After carrying a pump filter 100% of the time on backpacking trips no matter how long or how short, I finally found the solution to dropping almost a pound out of my pack by using the Steripen Adventurer. The fact that it's super easy to use AND frees up room in my pack are 2 added bonuses! I've always carried water purifier tablets as a back-up in case my pump filter craters on the trail and will continue to do so when carrying the Steripen. Lightweight, small, and easy to use---my 3 favorites!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as expected I bought this because i needed a way to have safe water to drink and I disliked the idea of the more traditional purifier because of the extra space it takes up and the need to change the parts. I have used it multiple times and have never gotten sick. It takes very little time to the water and is light and compact. I was worried about durability when i purchased but it is very durable and will last a long time. The light is a good idea but its not very bright and i find it to be pretty much worthless. The only problem with this is that you cannot let water get on the threads of your water bottle because it won't be pure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bring a few Coffee Filters Used exclusively backcountry on Cumberland Island. It's fast & user-friendly (BUT read the directions... it's NOT necessarily intuitive). It treats water, BUT it doesn't filter water... thus we packed some coffee filters in case we needed to strain the water before treating it. Worked perfectly and nobody got sick! It's light and it seems durable... thus it will accompany me not only backpacking but also on some international travels in the not so distant future. Note: I had trouble tracking down batteries for it... so make sure you pick those up well in advance of your trip; I had to go to Radio Shack (after trying various drug stores & supercenters). Highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light and Easy To Use. Beats Pump Filters As a user of a pump filter for my water purification for many years, I was skeptical of the ultra violet light technique to purify water. After my pump failed, a buddy recommended this product and I will never go back. Quick, light and easy to use this will provide great protection from water born bacteria. Only draw back is that it has no filter, so if your drinking out of a swamp it won't improve the taste. I solved this by using standard coffee filters. After using this product, I will never go back to pumping a water filter again. A sparse 2.3 oz and small footprint makes this the ideal backpacking product. I had no problems with the buttons as others apparently have.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I haven't gotten sick while using it, and it's super light and easy to use. The good: using this in local Ontario rivers/lakes seems to get rid of Giardia (which I'm told is abundant here), as evidenced by the fact that I don't get sick on hiking trips while using this. It holds up well to abuse, I dunked it a couple times and dropped it on rocks etc. and it still works. It's small size/weight makes it pretty ideal for hiking.,,The bad: I'm impatient so 1min for half a liter is too long. And, like all UV systems it doesn't get rid of sediment/gunk in the water so you have to be careful about where you draw from, and the water is never as clean-looking as filtered water.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Light weight Water Treatment The steripen is easy to use, time efficient, and lightweight. I used mine for a few weeks to treat all the water I drank. I was using to treat water for my friends as well. None of us got sick. I loved that we didn't have to waste time with a filter or worry about a filter breaking. Also we could drink our water without having the taste alterred. The only downside to this was that it drained batteries kind of fast. We ending up having to go to our back-up plan (chlorine dioxide tablets) when we ran out of batteries. Overall, the steripen is an outstanding product!
