"Excellent, lightweight backup" 05/05/12
This product has saved me a few times when my water filter has decided to fail. I have had no problems with the switch (unlike some reviews) but an on/off switch would make it even better. For week long treks I have no issues with battery life either. Love it
"Used without fail for 4 years" 03/09/12
I have the original version of this pen. Black and yellow, with the opaque black cap. Absolutely love it, with no problems whatsoever. I consider myself a lightweight packer, but not to the point where I'm cutting off toothbrush handles and product tags. The Steripen is perfect. No matter how full my pack is, there is ALWAYS room to slide it in somewhere. A set of lithium CR123s typically last about 75 treatments. Although I always carry an extra set of batteries and some treatment tablets, I've never actually had to use either. I was worried about taking what was basically a lightbulb into the backcountry, but the cap fits well and is very protective.
"Better Tasting Than Tablets" 03/08/12
This Steri-Pen is a fantastic lightweight option for purifying water. It works very well to complement another source of water purification but shouldn't be used as a sole source. Use with a ceramic filter, or at least prefilter with a bandanna before using; this keeps the solids out of your system as well as allows the Steri-Pen to work better. But its light enough to through in your pack as insurance against nasty water. Definitely recommend picking this up if you like safe, great tasting water!
"Excellent Light weight Water Treatment" 01/06/12
The steripen is easy to use, time efficient, and lightweight. I used mine for a few weeks to treat all the water I drank. I was using to treat water for my friends as well. None of us got sick. I loved that we didn't have to waste time with a filter or worry about a filter breaking. Also we could drink our water without having the taste alterred. The only downside to this was that it drained batteries kind of fast. We ending up having to go to our back-up plan (chlorine dioxide tablets) when we ran out of batteries. Overall, the steripen is an outstanding product!
"Great filter" 12/01/11
Used this backpacking the PCT. Sterilized nalgenes full of creekwater multiple times a day. Pen is designed to fit well in a Nalgene, but needs to be completely submerged, so bottles with small openings (like platypuses) don't work with the Steripen. Halfway through the trip we stopped sterilizing our water and drank straight from creeks. Still no giardia and no complaints, so who knows what's up.
"great UL H2O purification" 10/24/11
Small. Light. Simple. No tangles. No clogs. More durable than I feared. Did I mention it is small and light? This thing is a must have. In my opinion, this and the Miox are neck and neck as the two best UL H2O purifiers. Both have pros and cons, though. The steripen's biggest drawback for me is that I live in the southeast now where water is green and nasty if you are lucky, and worse if you are not. So you will have to develop a system for pre-filtering out the chunky bits before you light it up.
"Light and Easy To Use. Beats Pump Filters" 07/26/11
As a user of a pump filter for my water purification for many years, I was skeptical of the ultra violet light technique to purify water. After my pump failed, a buddy recommended this product and I will never go back. Quick, light and easy to use this will provide great protection from water born bacteria. Only draw back is that it has no filter, so if your drinking out of a swamp it won't improve the taste. I solved this by using standard coffee filters. After using this product, I will never go back to pumping a water filter again. A sparse 2.3 oz and small footprint makes this the ideal backpacking product. I had no problems with the buttons as others apparently have.
"simple and small" 06/24/11
Bought this to sterilise water in the boundary waters in MN. It is pretty light and compact when compared to other water purifiers, although you have to filter first to get rid of the crap (I use coffee filters as they are lightweight). The lid is a little tough to get on and off and I was a little scared of damaging the bulb at first but it has not broken yet. It is quick to use alothough it gets a little tedious if you have a lot of water to sterilize (only does 1L at a time max). Overall it is quick, small and it works!
"Works as expected" 04/23/11
I bought this because i needed a way to have safe water to drink and I disliked the idea of the more traditional purifier because of the extra space it takes up and the need to change the parts. I have used it multiple times and have never gotten sick. It takes very little time to the water and is light and compact. I was worried about durability when i purchased but it is very durable and will last a long time. The light is a good idea but its not very bright and i find it to be pretty much worthless. The only problem with this is that you cannot let water get on the threads of your water bottle because it won't be pure.
"good when it turns on" 02/16/11
Have only used this in a daily setting so far not camping or hiking. I find the directions for use easy, clear, and performs as it should. Light flashes green when its treated the water and red when it hasn't. When i fill the bottle over the 32oz line it seems like it always comes back red whether i do it for 2 cycles or not, so not sure if its sterilized or is not. Button to turn on cant be difficult at times to click, which i imagine can be very annoying in he woods or cold weather. Basically a good product only grips is the button to activate could be easier to use.
