"Best Product Ever"  04/24/11

The steripen works great. I use this whenever I go to mexico so I don't have to buy water. The water tastes pure and clean. I have never got sick by using the steripen. Now whenever I go to a foreign country with questionable water I bring my steripen. The first trip I went on I saved over 200$ in water.

"works great"  03/14/11

The SteriPen works great. I have used it while hiking on the AT and when I travel to places I just don't trust the water supply. The only down side is that you have to carry batteries with you. I found out about this from my friend who is a ex Nave Seal. He said that he has used it a over the place and has never gotten sick from drinking the water.

"Not working in the backcountry? No thank you!"  06/23/10

So, I am a little bit of a gadget geek, and was about to venture off on a two-week backpacking trip in Wyoming. I bought this, spent a gazillion dollars on the batteries they suggest, test it out at home, am super psyched. When I get to the land far beyond, no dice. It literally would not work. So unhappy. Obviously, I carried other means to purify water, but this was so not cool. I was like the dork who didn't know how to work the gizmo I'd just gotten. I tried it multiple times over the course of my trip and it never worked.Thankfully, it never worked when I got back.Moosejaw took it back and suggested a different one, which I haven't tried yet. But still. Mucho disapointingo.

"I love not having to carry gallons of water with me on the trails."  04/05/10

It's simple. Dunk the container in the stream, stick the uv wand in the water, press the button, shake it up while the uv light is lit, drink it. The filter will fit most universal wide mouth containers, but the one that comes in this kit is nice because it has measurements on the side. The wand takes 4 AA batteries, and in the research i've done the best batteries for the job are eneloop NiMH rechargeables. Available at amazon 8 for $25 and pre-charged.

"Easy to use, no taste, but bad battery life in the cold"  09/15/09

This is a great kit, easy and straight forward to use. I have used mine for two plus years living in the Himalayas and rural East Africa and haven't gotten sick. It uses the same proven principal of UV filtration that I promote in my humanitarian work, but is ready in a min instead of days. However in cold temperatures or used in cold water the batteries drain very quickly, so bring extra batteries and/or some tablets. The plastic on the water bottle lid is not very durable, but you're not buying the system for the water bottle. I'll continue to recommend Steripen.

"Kills bacteria before bacteria kills you"  08/19/09

It works. I used it several times to purify at least 10 gallons of river water in Washington Pass and it worked like a champ. It's much easier (if not always faster) than the pump systems and.... it doesn't require any pumping. Save that energy for the tent or inflating your thermarest. You don't need the bottle kit, but it makes life much easier.

"Keeps you well"  07/07/09

I've used this product to clean up water from streams and ponds, and to pre-sterilize water in my bottles before trips and the like. The pre-filter does a good job ridding the water of sediment, and the UV filter kills the bugs real good. Doesn't get rid of bad tastes in the water, however; for that sort of work, a good sand in bucket filter with some activated charcoal would be a good first step. This model may be superior to the newer ones that us CR123 batteries; it may be larger, but AA's can be found anywhere, and that can't really be said for CR123's.
