"Well, I ain't dead yet..." 03/21/10
To be honest, I really can't say for sure if this little device works or not. I've used it many times in the backcountry and have never gotten sick. However, I don't know if the water I treated and drank was tainted to begin with. Supposedly, the ultra-violet rays kill any DNA in the water, so nothing can reproduce in your belly. Brilliant! Best of all, you can treat a liter of water in just 90 seconds. I also like the fact that I'm not adding yucky, foul-tasting chemicals to my drinking water. Do yourself a favor and buy their filter, too. It screws directly onto a wide-mouth Nalgene bottle and filters out solids and turbidity prior to treatment.
"Works great/Saves weight" 02/08/10
No problems, no giardia. I've used it multiple times on lake and stream water in the Adirondacks and New Hampshire. You do have to push the tiny button really hard, like with a fingertnail or sharp stick.
"Ensures you kill everything in the water" 12/03/09
After a lot of research and use with other water purification methods, I settled on this. The advantages of this system over filters and chemicals is that it quickly kills viruses too. With most chemical solutions, you'd have to wait upwards of 4 hours to ensure everything was dead, but not with this. I prefer the Adventurer over other SteriPen models because it is lighter, and uses CR123A, which will work well when cold, unlike Alkaline and Ni-MH.
"the only thing that needs to be improved is the battery life" 12/02/09
I'm thinking of rigging up a solar charger for this guy, i know there's one available, but I think I can do it. like the train.Make sure you filter out sediments, or let them settle before using this dude. It kills germs, doesn't filter. I do not recommend using this for any water that you may suspect has chemicals inside of it.Love it!
"WOW, no s&%t, it works" 08/31/09
This thing really works! I used it and used it and used it. It works everytime. I had to test it first at home before going out into the field with it, so i scooped a glass of water from my pond, didn't get sick and it may all in my head but it seams to make the water taste better. Or it could just be the pond water talking.
"Intriguing technology, but has some limitations." 10/04/08
I started a recent 500-mile section hike of the pacific crest trail using a SteriPen Adventurer as my primary water treatment method. However, I found a couple of shortcomings, and they are as follows:1. Cloudy/murky water needs to be pre-filtered in order for the UV light to adequately treat the water you are about to drink. This is a hassle.2. In theory, if you simply scoop your water from its source in a wide-mouthed water bottle (for example, a nalgene), and swirl the steripen around in it, there is still untreated water on the threads and/or on the walls of the bottle.
"Great product. Highly recommend." 06/20/08
Ok, I live this thing, no pumping, no pain in the butt. However, make sure you replace the batteries when you buy it. My advice would be to test it out in your house to make sure the lamp/batteries areok, then take it with you on a trip. Also purchase the pre-filter to get out all the debris makes it even better.
"Wonder Wand" 06/01/08
THis Wand is in my pack. It has been all I've needed for water purification. However, if it was to break in the field, I'd have a problem. So I carry Chlorine Dioxide as a backup or I'm stuck boiling. Either way, better safe than sorry with the water.
