"How Did I Live Without Smartwool All My Life? Film at 11 pm!"
I am in love with Smartwool. This crew is Phen-O-Men-AL! Warmth. Dryness. Breathability. Comfort. It's got it all. I know you're thinking, "Wow, they want HOW MUCH for a long sleeve shirt?" I assure you it's worth every single solitary penny, and that's a lot of pennies! This is a quality item. It has outperformed in the cold, wet, rainy forests of Western WA and in the cold, windy desert evenings of Utah, Colorado and New Mexico.I wore this crew day in, day out, through strenuous eight mile hikes, while camping, and sleeping, during a few particularly cold nights of camping. And let's just be honest, you're not going to smell so great after a days to weeks of that kind of activity. Well, I might not have smelled so fabulous, but this crew did. I mean it. You can spend a week on the trails and then walk into a town restaurant and not offend. I've started wearing these shirts full time. Even when I'm not engaging in outdoor activities. They're that good.
Love the length on the torso, it layers down well over the matching bottoms. The seams are flat and its very comfortable. Wore almost every day for two weeks in Iceland this April. I'm typically a cold person, so I easily layered two more tops over this, then a rain jacket. Didn't overheat, did get sweaty, but dried quickly and took a long time for it to get really stinky. Will get another set next season.
I switched to wool for my base layers a few years ago. I had typically been using a polypro baselayer. This was my first wool baselayer, and it did not disappoint. It is soft against your skin. Living in the NW I get to deal with my fair share of moisture... and wool keeps you warm even if it is damp. It doesn't retain bad smells, which is a huge benefit to the longevity of the layer. I have used it XC skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, biking, rock climbing, and mountaineering. Whether it is alone or acting as a layer I have been very pleased with it. My only complaint is that it is rather expensive, but in this case you get what you pay for, quality.
