"Awesome Socks - If you're in between sizes, order the size up"
These socks are super comfortable, but definitely run on the tight side. So, if you have a size 9 foot and normally wear medium, definitely order the large (even though it already recommends getting the large). $20 for a pair of socks is crazy, unless you're buying smart wool.
When the only thing I have to complain about is that the stitching around the cuff come undone on one sock, these are some damn good socks. The seams are very comfortable and any stretching is totally undone by some shrinking and they are always odorless and comfortable, even after 10+ days in spring on the AT these were dry and fresh. Make sure to order on the upper end of the spectrum, maybe not a whole size up but lean bigger. And also be warned, if you buy 3 of these they may accidentally last you the rest of your life and you might never again experience the thrill of buying new socks. BE WARNED
As always I love my smartwool. These socks have been great for working outdoors and wearing with my hiking boots. They are very breathable, they do not stink even after days of wearing them and sweating in them. They don't chafe or irritate my feet when they are damp and sweaty either. Not are a bit thicker than my light crews which is fine, it makes them better for colder weather, yet they are still not so thick that they become uncomfortable while wearing boots.
These socks are great for keeping your feet warm during the winter, but can also be warn during the spring, summer and fall as it won't cause your feet to over heat. They a durable, and don't shrink in the wash, which I love, given then are a wool blend. They are very comfortable without being too plush to fit in your everyday shoes, like sneakers or regular boots, but also work with hiking boots for shorter treks. I wear these both for work and for outdoor adventures. All around great sock.
These socks are the best--the contouring that comes with the PhD setup is extremely comfortable. Makes your foot feel really well supported throughout the day. The socks are comfortable--warm enough without being hot; thin enough to be worn with most any shoes but still toasty. I wear these as often as I can.
These socks are awesome! I got them for hiking the AT. When I first got them you could tell they were quality made. The heel and toe area have extra cusion for impact and the sock fits tight around the ankle to keep the sock from sliding. I love to just wear these socks everywhere I go. I wear a size 11-11.5 and got the Large and they fit great!
"warm, durable, and keep the blisters off my heels"
I have been using Smartwool PhD socks for a year now for hiking. Nothing has made my feet happier. The thicker heel and toe keep the blisters away while the the thinner middle section doesn't add so much bulk over the top of my feet. I have tried the whole super thin sock thing. It just did not make me happy. These are a good compromise with extra padding where it helps and less bulk than typical wool socks.
I was a little hesitant about jumping into Smartwool socks, mostly due to the high price tag. Let me tell you though, you get what you pay for. The PhD line is awesome, and leaves your toes feeling super warm on cold winter mornings. Fit is great and the socks seem very well constructed. Don't kid yourself with cheaper wool socks, they don't compare. I highly recommend these!
"It's just a sock? Hardly. Will not hike without them ever again!"
These socks were incredibly comfortable right out of the packaging for a hike to the summit of Mt. Marcy in NY. Extremely breathable meaning that despite their thickness, I never once felt overheated in them despite the high temperatures of the day we went. Several mud/water puddles later, these socks combined with my trail shoes kept the feet nice and dry. After approximately 16 miles roundtrip with moderate elevation gain, I never felt any slipping and did not develop any blisters. Honestly, if I weren't actively assessing the quality of the sock while on the hike, I never would have noticed they were on, they are that unobtrusive and protective of the feet.Have used them on several more hikes- they remain as comfortable as day one. Washing and drying has not done any damage to the sole, so they seem like they'll have a long life.My wife blew a gasket when she found out I had spent this much on 1 pair of socks - but after a single use I cannot imagine using anything else
