I bought these to wear for a cross - country trip. They kept my piggies nice and warm but the wind did cut through these through my boots. I would buy a heavier version next time though these were good for 5-6 hours.
Excellent fit. Extra padding in high pressure areas is great. Welt areas appear to provide message. Very comfortable even the going on the third day. Wish they were longer and there was key to the washing symbols. What ever happened to writing prose.
These PhD socks are cool because they only have padding in areas where you need it -- the heel and toebox. Elsewhere, they're lighter elastic, which is great for keeping your feet cool and dry around the arch and top of the foot. Of course, if you're used to thicker-all-around socks -- and critically, if you've broken in your hiking boots with big bulky ones -- you might have to adjust a bit. But it's worth the adjustment. I wear size 10.5 and got the Large, and they fit well. I was worried at first that they were too small -- they fit really tightly -- but that's so the friction is sock-boot rather than foot-sock, preventing blisters (and removing the need for liners, if you're like me and hate wearing two layers). These are relatively thin and best for three-season hiking/backpacking: if you took these winter hiking/climbing, you would freeze. (Go for a thicker pair if you want warmth in sub-40 degree temperatures).
I love smartwool socks. Super soft, warm, and breathable. They also do a good job at keeping my feet from sweating too much (which is sometimes a problem with other socks). And they don't really absorb odors or moisture and themselves stay dry and fresh without washing for longer than most other socks I've worn.
"These socks are dialed in like my saddle height"
Whether its 30* F and raining or the brutal Louisiana sun is beating down, these light, wool socks regulate your foot temperature while cycling unlike any other. They are like a base layer for your feet, making sure that the last thing you're worried about on your ride is a blister or cold feet. Save those for your wedding day.
This is a well made sock, comfortable with extra padding in the right areas so you won't get blisters on the trail. You can't have too many pairs of these. They feel even better when you slip on a pair of Zamberlans over them... :)
I swear by Smartwool after wearing these socks. Keeps my feet cool, drys quick, well made, comfortable. I love the extra padding around the toe and heel area. I won't consider buying anything other than merino wool socks for hiking/backpacking. Worth the money.
"Comfortable Breathable Socks that work with sucky shoes too"
Ahhhh. That is what my feet said after a long day of walking around in wet muddy crap, with crappy shoes on over these amazing socks. I walked through puddles on a dirt trail after weeks of rain. My shoes soaked through, but my feet stayed warm and felt dry! Cant tell you enough how much I like these socks! The padding on the toes and heels is excellent. Expensive for socks, but smartwool is well worth it!
I bought these socks for rucking in the military, and so far they've withstood everything the Marine Corps has thrown at them. I can wear these for multiple days in a row and my feet stay dry and cool. After getting wet they will continue to prevent blisters and are still comfortable. 20 mile hikes are no sweat (literally!) and I've never had to change them out during a ruck. You will not go wrong with these socks!
