Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Gold Standard for Comfortable Wool Socks Great socks... I have about 6 pairs that are my go-tos for winter weather and trekking in cold conditions. These socks can wear all day and stay comfortable, provide cushion and relatively not smell bad. You can wear them into the shower at a hotel and let them dry overnight, and they will be ready to rock n' roll the next day. For warmer conditions you might want to get the hiker or lightweight socks, because these will get warm with pants on during summer months in the Northern Hemisphere. Although they are pricey compared to cotton socks they amortize their value over the amount you will wear them, and they will last through multiple washes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast-drying, comfortable, and warm. What else could you want? These socks are excellent. I used four pairs of them recently on a three-week trip to the Canadian Rockies. They are everything you need in a sock: comfortable to wear, warm when it's chilly, and they dry really quickly. If it's sunny outside, just a few minutes in the sun at your campsite will get these socks in wearable condition for the next day of backpacking. A nice added bonus is that they don't smell too terrible, even after you wear them for multiple days in a row. I found that they worked great when they were wet.,,,,I know that this can seem a little expensive for a hiking sock, but it's definitely worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Sock! I've owned both natural and synthetic fiber based socks. My backpacking trips typically are 5-7 day loop trips with 14er day climbs mixed in. They are long days with agressive scrambling in hiking boots on the 14ers (I really ought to take the standard routes up) or more tradition backpacking style hiking days on the others...usually around 9-12 miles. I typically wear them for 3-4 days until they are crusty before switching to clean pair. I have never gotten blisters and these socks do a great job of protecting the feet and wicking away the moisture. Excellent durablilty, the only problem is the odor doesn't come out after my trips...but every hiking sock I own has that problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved my smartwool socks so much I purchased two pair for my oldest son who is 11. I have owned several different brands of hiking socks over the years and had tried to stay away from wool and wool blends in the past. However, after buying my first pair and wearing them camping and hiking over the weekend I returned home and purchased a second pair. I am now buying these for the whole family. I really like the way they feel on my feet, they stay secure and in place. I hate those socks that you always are having to pull up because they are always sliding down in your boots. Secondly, these smartwool socks provide more cushion in the heel and arch then the other brands I own.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great socks These socks keep my feet warm and dry, and are slightly cushioned without being bulky. Delightful to wear. I also bought some for my elderly father, who has some circulation issues and always has cold feet. He loves his socks as well. However, I think they fit a little tightly around the top for someone with very severe circulation issues. They are not uncomfortable; quite the contrary. When they are removed at the end of the day, there is a slight indentation around his ankle from the sock which may or may not ease up with continued washings. That may be a consideration for some people.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from warm. comfortable. just plain wow I got three pairs of these socks because I was traveling to Sarajevo Bosnia in the wintertime. I walked miles every day, often in snow and these bad boys really kept me warm. I sometimes wore a thin liner sock, but I mostly just wore these. My feet were nice and toasty.,,,,I lived in southern Africa for a few years and because we didn't have any heat in the houses it was the same temperature inside as it was out. On average it was about 40 F with the coldest being 32 F. I was so cold, but my feet weren't. I've loaned them out several times to friends who were cold and they loved them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mother know best A few years back on xmas my mom got me a pair of smartwool socks for the winter. Now, normally her gifts are misses and not hits but not that time. I have been a fan ever since. Quite simply, smartwool socks keep my feet warm, breath enough that I don't sweat, and don't slide around on my foot. There's really nothing more to ask for. When I started hiking last year I naturally tried out smartwool hiking socks. They strike a tricky balance of padding and breathability and oh I love them so. The bonus is that merino wool wicks moisture and doesn't reek after use. Why use anything else?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for hiking! I was given a pair of these socks as a gift, and at the time was thinking .....what??? I wore them once, and ordered two more pair for myself. They keep my feet warm and dry, and are slightly cushioned without being bulky. Delightful to wear. I also bought some for my girlfriend, who has some circulation issues and always has cold feet. She loves her socks as well. However, I think they fit a little tightly around the top for someone with very severe circulation issues. They are not uncomfortable; quite the contrary. When they are removed at the end of the day, there is a slight indentation around his ankle from the sock which may or may not ease up with continued washings.
