I bought this to round up to $50 bucks for free shipping. It worked great at that. I then spotted a bear while hiking in North Georgia. The bear ran off thankfully so I broke out the safety whistle tooted a bit and got on with the hike. I kept tooting it every few bits alternating with my SL3 Knife's built in whistle. The knife's whistle was louder and after about five miles I realized the whistle had flown the coop. Its crappy plastic latch didn't stay up on my belt loop. If you're hiking the Coosa Backcountry Trail and you find an orange whistle please return it to me. Thanks.
"Its a whistle, hope you never have to use it"
for backpacking ditch the black plastic and use some spectra cord to make a little keeper. then slip it somewhere on the shoulder straps where you can get to it quick. It might not be the loudest whistle ever, but will the extra 1/2 mile range of a good one be the life/death difference? Works pretty good for paddling too when its wet. Might as well carry one just in case.
Nice light little safety device that's hard to lose because of it's color. I just wish the whistle was a little louder, and it requires quite a bit of lung pressure to get a good sound, which I'm not sure if I would have in an emergency situation. It's cheap and light, though. And maybe at some point it will prove useful.
It was better after I pulled the plastic clip off and ran a piece of cord through the hole. I hung in the bathroom for my 99 y/o grandmother, in case she needed help. She never used it over her stay, so it's now in my backpack. There are louder whistles out there, but this one has a niffty little clothes pin like side clip for easy storing!
