Platypus Gravityworks Filter
Moosejaw Staff Pick
"The Platypus Gravityworks filter rules because you don't have to actively filter the water. You load up the dirty (top) reservoir, hang from a tree or whatever, and through the miracle of gravity water flows through the filter, into a clean reservoir, and you’re ready to go. Cleaning the filter cartridge is just as simple, as you just hang whole thing upside, run clean water through the filter backwards, and it flushes all the particulates back into the dirty reservoir."

"Best filter on the market!!!" 04/21/13
After years of using a hand pump water filter this was a breath of fresh air!! I bought this right before I took my fiance out on his first backpacking trip. Now I want to go buy a hand pump one just so he can pay his dues and suffer like the rest of us used to!! I cannot even believe how much time this saves! You just put the "dirty" bag in the running stream, attach it to the filter, and that is it. Liters of clean water without a single pump!! No more hand cramping or getting wet feet (because you are too lazy to put your boots in in the morning). I will agree that the seals on the bag can be difficult to close, but I will gladly battle with them!
"This thing is awesome!" 04/04/13
I have used this product for a year with my family of four on our camping/hiking adventures. Its foolproof design gives me confidence that I am doing it right and the ice-cold water from the rivers tastes so good. I would totally recommend this product to friends, family, and random people on the trail!
"Best filter I have ever used" 03/25/13
I had this filter with me on a recent trek I guided. It was amazing, kept water flowing for all 10 of us on the trail, no one was mad they got stuck filling all the bottles and it was so easy even our first timers were able to use it easily! It is also the fastest filter I have ever used because of volume/ease. I am buying these to replace all the old ones I have used. it is also great because the bag it filters into doesn't bog down a personal bottle so you have camp use water.
"Can't wait to use this!" 12/18/12
I am excited to get out and use this Platypus product. I had debated purchasing a gravity filter is the past. Others I have used are very slow to filter as they have a single "dirty" bag with a filter at the end. This allows storage of clean water, plus easy cleaning.
"fantastic product. sure beats a hand pump when filling a lot of bottles." 12/17/12
Love this product. Ease of use is so important when dealing with a wild bunch of Boy Scouts. All you need is a water source deep enough to plunge the "dirty" bag or a small waterfall to let the water take the plunge. Fill it up, raise it up, and let gravity do the rest. You can't make a wrong connection so no worries there either. Smaller hands may struggle closing the seal on the "dirty" bag but that is only important if you want to lay the bag down or put it in a pack to carry to camp. No more pumps for us - except when we know the only water source will be shallow, slow moving streams - places we can't just "dunk and lift".
"Super Duper" 12/09/12
The Platypus Gravityworks filter is nothing short of amazing. The two 4 liter bags are clearly labeled clean and dirty so you wont drink unsanitary water on accident. I used it for two 5 day backpacking trips this passed summer(2012) to South Manitou Island and the Pictured Rocks and it excelled in providing great filtered water. Very easy to use. The filter may get clogged by various things(my case was sea weed) so just invert the clean bag over the dirty bag to cause a back flow to unclog it. The 4 liter bags allow for the storage of up to 8 liters, great for cooking and refilling your water bladders/bottles. The best feature about this filter is that it filters fast with minimal work.
"Great Filter" 11/02/12
When it comes to water filters I think this might be the best. I know some people like prefer tablets or a steripen but those aren't filters so they are not included on the "best of" conversation. What makes this guy great is that its so light weight and easy to use. all you do is fill one bag with water and then put it higher than the other bag. Things can't get much easier. The only downside I found with this filter is that there are a lot of parts that can easily get lost.
"Couldn't be easier" 09/17/12
I've used this a number of times, and I love how easy it is. Just fill it up, hang it up, and in 10 minutes you have a bulging pack of clean water. I usually camp with a group of about 4-8, and each fill usually covers all cooking, cleaning, brushing needs for the camp for about half a day. I also have a 2L Platypus hydration bladder, which attaches so you can filter straight into that before hikes. My only complaint is the tiny black stopper piece which you're supposed to pop onto the filtering device when you detach the hose to prevent contamination is exceedingly easy to lose. I might fashion some way to attach it to everything else when I'm not using it.
"Awesome" 08/15/12
This thing rocks. You can filter just over a gallon of water in about 5 minutes. It's very light and packs to a pretty small size. If you need to carry extra water you can store it in these things too! I did some car camping last weekend and hung the bladder from my canopy tent and set up my kitchen area with running water! All in all i would recommend this to anyone.
"Blew Every other filter I have used out of the water....." 07/03/12
This is the best Filter I have ever come across hands down! I lead adventure trips for youth all summer and this filter kept everyone's bottles full, was so easy even the never been hiking kids could use it, and it was durable enough to survive multiple trips with teenagers. It packs up small enough to tuck into a side pocket on a pack but carries a huge amount of water and filters so fast. the best part is you don't have to do anything to get the water other than find a source. you can just sit there and relax as tasty water is being prepared for you! if there is any product I will be shamelessly plugging this summer it is this for sure!
"Would be a tad heavy for the AT or PCT. But, you can't beat the ease/simplicity of the product." 06/24/12
Last weekend took my 4 year old son to Nordhouse Dunes. We dunked in Lake Michigan: hung on the tree @ the campsite and had water to spare; for drinking, cooking, cleaning and brushing the pearly whites. I found it easy to use; can carry up to 8 liters of H2O w/o difficulty and the water tasted wonderful. Last year carried in water, and ran out; well except for the Tonic water. Looking forward to using it in the future.
"Super easy all-in-one" 06/21/12
The gravityworks filter is excellent, not only can i carry a %#&$load of water back to camp, and with another drinking tube, can double as a pack hydration bladder. Not to mention its compatiblility with other platypus systems. but my favorite feature of the system is that its all inclusive and easy to clean.
