"Good filter for multi-day trips when space & weight are at a premium"
The Platypus filter is a good system when you're on multiday trips and space / weight is a premium. The upside is that it packs down small, comes in a handy lightweight mesh case to keep it all together and is easy to use (no hand cramps from pumping, or trying to squeeze water for your dinner through a straw). The downside is that grit can block the filter (easy fixed by backflushing - but you'll need practice before you go), it takes some time to set up and it works best when you've got a water source that is plentiful as you need to fill the bag. For the gram counters, here's a tip: you can cut down some of the tube length - it's a little on the generous side.
"1st bag of H2O filtered wonderfully - way cool. Slowed to trickle by 3rd bag. Backflush won't clear"
I've been using a First Demand unit for years and wasn't thrilled with it - too much work - clogs easily. I bought a GravityWorks 2.0L two weeks ago and took it on an 8-day backpacking trip. I was ecstatic with the first bag of water - it filtered in about 3 minutes. The second bag filtered in 5 minutes. The third bag took about a half hour. After that, no filtration. I backflushed the unit a half dozen times with clean water and the syringe. It filtered 2.0L in about 10 minutes, then slowed to a stop again. I brought it home after the trip and Backflushed it a dozen or so times and ran clean water thru it backwards. It just doesn't clean out and will not empty a bag of clean water thru the filter in a half hour. The water I was filtering had small amounts of silt in it but not excessive. I wanted to love this unit and would have accepted the need to backflush - but it doesn't resolve the problem.
This product is awesome. My friends and I have had yearly camping trips to North Manitou Island (low impact camping/no campground) since 1996 and we have always used the pump water filers which were slow, tedious and did not provide much in volume. Also, you had to stand in the water bending forward so the intake tube stayed under.Us girls have a new lease on life with this Filter! It is so easy, you full the dirty bag, come out of the water and hold it over your head for a couple of minutes and you have several liters of clean water! If you have a tree nearby you can just hang it on a short branch and let gravity work there. At our campsite we pick a tree to be our water station - we hang the beg high until it is done filtering then hang it on a lower branch and fill our water bottles whenever we need to, rinse our hands, fill our cooking pots, etc.
