Product Description Item No.   10026327

The William Screw-Lock Carabiner by Petzl is a manual locking pear-shaped carabiner with a large opening making it best suited for organizing at belays with a Munter hitch. This uniquely patented Keylock gate uses a key-shaped nose on the 'biner and slot-shaped gate to create a strong, snag-free closure. The William Screw-Lock has a red band to indicate when the device is unlocked to leave you climbing or caving confidently when you go to double-check your gear. The Keylock system helps prevent snagging of the carabiner during maneuvers and is recommended for dirty environments where dust and dirt could cause an automatic locking mechanism to malfunction.

FEATURES of the Petzl William Screw-Lock Carabiner

  • Large size and opening to allow easy anchoring of several ropes and slings
  • Wide pear shape facilitates belaying with a Munter hitch
  • Keylock system helps prevent snagging of the carabiner during maneuvers
  • Red indicator provides a visual warning when the carabiner is unlocked (on Screw-Lock version)
  • Tearing energy absorber is protected from abrasion with a zippered pouch. Also allows quick and easy inspection of the condition of the webbing
  • Short, third arm attached to energy absorber, convenient for Tyrolean traverses, for climbing while close to the cable or attaching to rungs (while resting)
  • Harness connection loop is twisted to facilitate connecting to the harness with a girth hitch

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very large and solid workhorse biner This very large locking carabiner is perfect for belaying or any function where you have multiple ropes or need a bombproof connector. The red band that appears when the biner is not locked is useful, although I have seen it fade on my friend's biner. The screw is smooth and doesn't seem to unscrew itself, and the operation of the gate is smooth and trusty, the keylock nonsnagging. I find it too thick to use for safety at the anchor, because it will fill a whole bolt hole where other biners might leave space for another biner. Compared with the Black Diamond Rocklock, the feeling of quality is better, but that comes at the expense of a few more dollars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favorite Locker This is possibly my favorite locker in my pack. As everyone else has said, yes it is big. It has a clearance that is significantly wider then any other locker I have used. Once you get so large this isn't really an advantage anymore. The screw gate is too large to slide though the grigri attachment, but then again most locker are. It does still slide thought the anchor point of an ATC guide for adjustment in anchoring and top belaying. The offset D has a smoother angle then most meaning that it will slip around when using in regular belay position from your harness, but this is rarely an issue if you know what you are doing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Questionable Durability. Bought one of these for my harness about 3 months ago, and it doesn't really take me. It feels hollow and flimsy for the price you pay, however it's quite light so if that's what you're after... It functions well, and the extra feature of a red gate telling you that you need to close the gate is a great idea. However, I wouldn't buy another screw gate. It's just not reliable enough for people as clumsy as me. In a nutshell, it's okay, but I'd not but another.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works well, but could improve. Straight forward: Great piece of equipment. Nice and big, easy to use.... however, if I worked for Petzl and had some say, I would have had the design team make the screw lock just a little easier to unscrew. Once screwed shut into locked position, it can be VERY hard to undo. (Unless you use a piece of webbing as grip or you're Superman). Especially an issue if you need to release in a hurry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Huge - Exactly What You Want In A Saftey Device This is a fantastic belaying carabiner, I was so impressed I had to buy a backup. There is not much going on in terms of style but this piece is large and the locking mechanism is very sturdy. It feels overkill until you start taking huge falls, then you start appreciating it. I matched this up with a GriGri 2 and I couldn't be happier.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worth it. I prefer the basic screw-lock over the williams autolock biner. The screwlock works well and doesn't unscrew itself. If I have any complaint it's that sometimes I have troubles getting it started to unscrew. The large size of the biner allows for many different uses. I suggest if your going with a locking biner to choose this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big, Bad, Beautiful Okay. Obviously this isn't a biner you clip your chalk bag to. It's big, it's bad, it's beautiful. The D shape is splendidly multifunctional. I use it to anchor and hoist my gear. The screwgate is super smooth. Petzl makes a fine product that surpasses the competition in it's refinement. Highly recommend getting two!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You want'em big, you want'em roomy, you want'em eye-catching? you wanting this thing. Wow, gorgeous biner. Fell in-love as soon as I saw it. This thing is huge, huge gate opening, huge space in the biner, huge hold ratings. The gate action is smooth, the keylock is awesome. Oh and I have to mention the finish on this thing again, just gorgeous. And to think I almost bought a Omega Pacific Jake instead.
