This is probably the best camping headlamp Petzl makes. It has better quality proximity light than my (twice as expensive) tikka xp 2 with diffuser up. I wouldn't mind having red LED= four stars.
Not sure what 'it's not bright enough' means. I've used this to light up my life on the trail and at camp. Two power settings plus the super low powered red LED that cuts through campfire smoke and doesn't disturb your camp buddies should be enough for all but the most seasoned, lonely outdoorsy types. I've found that it isn't that waterproof, but then again, it's not rated to be. It'll survive a light rain though. Adjustments on the fly are a breeze and battery life is acceptable, especially on the low and red light settings.I wish it ran on two AAA's as opposed to 3, but it's cool. It's still way versatile and a great addition to my kit.
My wife and I both love our Tikka 2's. The headbands are comfortable and easily adjustable. The blindingly bright LEDs provide substantial light and a long battery life. I've used mine a few times a week for a year and haven't had to change the batteries yet. Once you have one you'll find 1,000 more uses than just outdoor recreation. Get you one!
While Petzl generally makes awesome products, I would say that the Tikka 2 is one of their weakest. Although the style and ease of use are fabulous, this headlamp is just not bright enough for the cost. In addition, the battery pack of my last one disintegrated very quickly. I would suggest going with a Black Diamond lamp instead, especially if you value the red light feature as much as I do.
