"Great for Alpine Slogs"  08/30/10

This is really the only ice axe I have used, so I can't compare it, but I was happy with it. It's not a walking stick, even at the largest size, you would have to be pretty short to use it as such. It really excels on steep snow slopes. I struggled up a 60 degree snow field with this guy and snow shoes. It was scary, but the ice axe performed admirably. The rubber is easy to grip and swing from below with large mittens. The head is also natural to hold in self arrest position. The top clip point can be a little finnicky if you want to get a carabiner in there. If you plan to use it as an anchor, maybe tie some cord onto it.
