A pared-down version of the Aztar, the Petzl Aztarex Ice Axe excels in situations where every gram counts but there's no room for sacrifices. Ideal for technical, fast-and-light mountaineering, the hand rest provides extra support and allows the tool to be used leashless, and when not needed, it can be removed and stored in the shaft so as not to interfere when plunging the tool in snow. The included Blueice pick is designed for hard ice and hooking.

"Awesomely light and versatile!"  01/10/11

This is a great mountaineering and ice climbing axe. It is extremely light. I first used it for some light mountaineering and found that the shaft worked just perfect to walk on steep snow, the curve wasn't too aggressive so as not to be useful in snow. I then used it for vertical ice climbing and thought it had a really nice swing and the little thing at the bottom of the shaft works perfectly to rest your arm. Overall I would say this is a great tool and would recommend it to anyone who is looking to do mountaineering and technical climbing but doesn't want to spend millions and carry four axes everywhere!

"Awesomely light and versatile!"  01/10/11

This is a great tool if you want to do mountaneering and more technical ice climbing. It is extremely light. I first used it to do some light mountaineering and found it was perfect to walk in snow, the curve on the shaft is not so aggressive that it becomes useless in mountaineering. I then used it for some vertical ice climbing and it worked perfectly, it had a great swing and the little hold at the end of the shaft is extremely useful to rest your hand.

"Perfect alpine tool"  04/09/10

These are my tools of choice for anything steep in the alpine. For vertical ice, they are the lightest tool I've seen, but also have the best performance. With the hollow shaft, ALL of the weight is in the head, giving impressive penetration. The pick and shaft angles are great, and hook nicely. I love the finger-catch, and confidently use these leashless. On the approach, they are comfortable to hold in self-belay or self-arrest grip. They plunge well in most snow conditions, and the finger-catch unscrews into the shaft for harder snow. The finger-catch (whether in the shaft, or otherwise) stops snow from clogging the shaft.

"Awesome "Light and Fast" technical mountaineering tool"  08/17/09

This tool is at home in moderate and steep alpine terrain, ice, snow, mixed you name it.It's lightness makes the Aztarex tools the choice for light and fast technical mountaineers. It will plunge with ease unlike most ice climbing tools, this is gold when pitching on steep snow.It is not a vertical ice tool but it will take happily on the pitches you might face on the slopes. You'll also be glad this is your tool when you have to carry it in your 20kg+ pack for a number of days.If what you are after is mostly vertical iceclimbing, then you should get a heavier tool, as it will have better ice penetration.
