The Ascension Ascender by Petzl is the benchmark for handled ascenders and has been refined to provide greater comfort; efficiency, ease of use. The ergonomically shaped grip is over molded with rubber for greater friction and the broader surface provides greater comfort while pulling on the ascender. The grip is wider at the bottom providing better comfort for your hand during use. The index finger indent has also been increased offering greater efficiency when pulling on the ascender. The trigger to open/close the cam is now recessed inside the frame to avoid accidentally opening the cam while in use. The cam has been redesigned to minimize friction when sliding the ascender along the rope while the angled teeth provide secure grip in the worst conditions (wet, icy, or on muddy ropes). The geometry of the single piece aluminum frame ensures optimal handle orientation when the device is loaded and will maintain solid, comfortable performance even after thousands of meters of jugging.

"Simple and reliable. Ergonomic, too." 11/23/11
Petzl has made a very nice piece of gear here. The handle is easy to grip and hold on to. The rope only passes one-way when the cam is engaged. And I've never had it damage the sheath. I especially like the large carabiner hole at the top to keep the rope from pushing the cam down (and killing you). Very handy to have when the nerves are a little shaky. This is my favorite ascender. I went ahead and purchased its evil twin, but in retrospect, I only needed one. I guess it's nice to have a complete set, though. I used it in my frog system along with a Petzl Croll (also awesome!)

"Ok but there are better products on the market" 03/28/11
Its really no different than the older blue and gold generation models but for some reason they are more expensive. Its really only useful if you are working when you are wearing gloves.
"Buy this RIGHT now" 12/27/10
Other ascenders have torn up my rope, but there isn't even a tiny fray after using this. I have both the left and right, and they fly up rope. I feel confident dangling from one, they're easy to get on and off, I can't say enough good things about these. Oh, and less moving parts then the bd ascenders- my climbing buddy has those and we always end up relying on mine.
"user friendly!" 12/01/10
my previous experience was with the petzl crevasse rescue kit, this beats the pants of that kit! these are really easy and straight forward to use. big handles are the bee's knee's when wearing gloves and the thumb slots are grand!
"Better than BD nForce" 08/20/10
I have always used Petzel ascenders and thought they worked just fine. I recently tried the BD version on the headwall on Denali's West Butt and had the opportunity to see that Petzl is a bit smoother and has less parts to freeze up. Plus it's even lighter. Hey, those grams add up.
"Top notch ascenders" 03/15/10
Great ascender. I havent used any other kind, but these ones are real smooth and so far they havent torn up my rope too much. a nick here and there, but what do you expect from aluminum needles. I especially like the lock out function of the cam which allows you to get it on and off a rope easily. and the best part....they double as a haul bag break so you dont have to carry a mini traxion!
