The Women's R4 Jacket is made of Patagonia's aptly named R4 fabric, their warmest fleece material. On the outside this mid-layer may just look like a super comfy fleece.... and you're not wrong, but under the surface it is packed with all kinds of technical features. So don't solely judge it by its cover. The R4 material is comprised of 3 layers: a Polartec Windbloc polyester with windproof laminate sandwiched between a high-loft exterior and an R2 grid interior. The collar is lined with soft brushed tricot for next-to-skin comfort, and the fit is closer and more technical with elastic in the cuffs and hem for more mobility and coverage. So yeah, it's a super comfy fleece, but there's a lot going on behind the scenes to deliver the coziness that you'll appreciate.
FEATURES of the Patagonia Women's R4 Jacket
R4 fabric is windproof, super warm and stretchy
Jacket has a refined fit, underarm gussets and offset shoulder seams for comfort under a pack
All seams has Sonic/Stitch seam construction to reduce bulk and improve suppleness
Brushed tricot on inner collar; soft, kissing-welt zipper garage at chin for next-to-skin comfort
Two hand pockets have Slim Zip installs and clean finished zipper garages; two internal drop-in mesh pockets
Single-pull adjustable hem
Hiking, Skiing, Climbing, Casual, Mountaineering and Alpine
Polartec Power Dry
Polartec Power Dry pulls moisture directly off your skin and moves it to the outer surface to dry quickly. The continuous evaportation helps keep you cool. It's like some sort of engine which is fueled by your gross sweat and emits comfort. Power Dry gives fabrics greater efficiency, versatility and overall performance.
Polartec Thermal Pro
Polartec Thermal Pro is soft and plush on the inside, but has a durable exterior. It's a lot like an M&M. But not really. Thermal Pro is fast drying, highly breathable, wind and water repellent and has an impressive warmth to weight ratio. M&M has nothing on that. Too bad you can't buy Polartec Thermal Pro with peanuts or peanut butter on the inside, though.

Women's Fit Guide Details & Info
Patagonia's measurements refer to body size and NOT garment dimensions. Sorry for yelling about it.

FORMFITTING • Conforms to the body's contours.
SLIM FIT • Closer-fitting. Slim-fitting technical garments may be worn over baselayers and light midlayers.

RELAXED FIT • Drapes loosely on the body. Men's relaxed fit pants have a bit of extra room through the hip, thigh, lower, and cuff.
CLASSIC BOY FIT • Boxy, athletic, with a traditional crew neck.
ANIKA FIT • Formfitting and longer in the torso, with a wider, deeper neck (not quite scoop).

My second R4, amazingly warm.I can't say enough about this coat, I love it. I have a two year old R4, it's still in great shape, I just wanted another color. This is the warmest coat ever. Chicago is sooooo cold and windy, but this coat really keeps me warm, and it's really cute. The wind doesn't scare this coat, it's tough. I ordered my regular size and it fits perfectly. I highly recommend this coat.

Love this coat!I absolutely love my R4 coat! It's perfect for Chicago where we can have wind, rain, snow and crazy weather changes all within one week. I love that it's completely waterproof and mostly water-resistant(Haven't worn it in a full on rainstorm but it protects you in light drizzles) and not too bulky. ,,,,Yes, it's not as warm as my floor-length down puffer coat but it's definitely light and easy to pack. It's so versatile in a lot of different climates and also makes a snuggly pillow on the plane ;)

great jacket...if you can find a size that fits :(After seeing the top performance of this jacket for my husband, I finally decided to make a similar investment. I have lots of gear from Patagonia and ordered size accordingly. I was shocked at how form fitting and tight this coat was upon arrival given it's description as regular fit and the fit of my husband's fleece. Figuring I just ordered the wrong size, moose jaw rocked and sent the next 2 sizes up for me to try at the store. Sadly, I had the same problems. The medium didn't really fit any different than the small, and then I drowned in the large. If you end up purchasing this coat and it fits you, perhaps don't tell me-I'd be wicked jealous! I know the performance potential is outstanding, really disappointed with the sizing. I've NEVER had to turn down a Patagonia item because of size.

Great jacketI bought this about a month ago because my other half has one and wears it into the Wisconsin winter without any issues of being cold. Now that I have my own I love it. Only thing was the sizing is a little goofy. I wear a medium in all other brands I own but ended up needing a large. Nice jacket though and is mostly wind proof and warm on brisk fall mornings!

I can't believe these are being discontinued!!!I purchased this one for my partner. She normally wears a small, but had to go with a medium, as the arms were very tight and this would not allow for layering. I personally just purchased my second R4, not because the first one has worn out after 15 years, but because Patagonia is discontinuing the R4 and I want one for down the road.

I'D GIVE THIS TEN STARS IF I COULD!!!I had the older version of this jacket and loved the softness and warmth of this coat. It's also very lightweight. When I saw it in the cobalt blue I decided to buy another one. They did change the cut on this coat so although I wore a medium in the old version I had to get a large in this version since the sleeves are much tighter with this design. It's also a little longer than the previous version which to me is a plus. I think it looks even better a little longer and it covers you more so it's warmer as well. I am a huge fan of The North Face and own several jackets by them but I have to say this is probably my favorite cold weather jacket. It's lightweight, windproof, has two large pockets on the inside of the jacket, nice sized zipper pockets on the outside, is really soft inside and out, and is extremely comfortable to wear. I also like the purple detail on the cobalt jacket. It really is a great looking jacket. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this purchase.

Whats the difference between this and the Retro X? Looking for a windproof jacket for winter wear at college. I did see that the Retro X wouldn't be good in rain or snow but is the R4 any different? Would the Retro X Handel backpack straps better?
Asked by: Chris
Thanks for the question. The R4 is made of Patagonia's warmest fleece and also includes Polartec's Power Dry material for the best moisture wicking performance, keeping you dry from the inside if you sweat inside. The R4 is not designed to be waterproof or water resistant so I would not suggest wearing it on its own in wet or snowy conditions. It would work well worn with a waterproof outer shell. These are about the same thickness of fabric and neither have additional reinforcement over the shoulder, but due to the paneling on the Retro X's shoulder areas, it may be able to handle backpack straps better.
