The Patagonia Transport 45L MLC Pack is a carry on suitcase with multiple carry options for getting around the airport. The Transport MLC is soft sided and is most often carried on the shoulder, like a messenger bag. You can also carry it like a briefcase using one of two reinforced side handles, or unzip the shoulder straps and carry like a backpack for hands free quickness. Opening like a book, you can stuff (or fold, sorry Mom) clothing in for a three to five day trip. A padded laptop sleeve can fit most 17 inch machines, so your portable office is always nearby. The front compartment is all about organization, for your wallet, passport, and pens. For those with a rolling suitcase, the large fabric sleeve on the inside of the pack slides over telescoping handles. Super handy.
FEATURES of the Patagonia Transport 45L MLC Pack
Main zippered compartment opens like a book and features two separate compartments for easy packing, access and organization; compression straps hold clothing
Second zippered compartment holds shoes; two small zippered pockets organize travel essentials
Third pocket with key clip provides easy access to tickets and passports
Fourth pocket sits flat for documents and magazines
Three carrying options: Backpack-style with ergonomic shoulder straps that tuck neatly into a zippered compartment; shoulder-bag style with comfortable shoulder strap; briefcase-style with two carry handles
Rear sleeve allows you to slip the tote on and off rolling luggage handles
Durable Water Repellant
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. It's cute to think of a fabric as being afraid of water. Now if only they could make a bearphobic coating. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

The best bag for mobility while traveling!I bought this bag for a trip to Europe and it was so awesome that I bought a second one for my husband. It's the size of a standard carry on, but has multiple options for handling, including briefcase style, over-the-shoulder, or as a backpack. It allows me to travel comfortably while holding a week's worth of clothes and the backpack option allows me to blend in while traveling so that I don't stand out as a tourist like rolling suitcases tend to do.
The quality is superb, the design and pockets for organization are perfect, and I refuse to travel with any other bag. Do yourself a favor and get yourself a Patagonia MLC!

Great Second Piece of LuggageI recently purchased the MLC pack and it has a great amount of space. What you'll appreciate is it's ability to be a carry on that carries everything without needing to rolled around. You can just sling it over your shoulder! One of the cool aspects is that there is a mesh that separates your clothes from the rest of your materials. I'm looking to be traveling the world in the next few months and this is ideal for a 2nd luggage to my big duffel. One critique is that the zipper (has been a consistent issue in other reviews as well) will often get caught on the inside material. I've gotten more comfortable with how to unzip without it getting stuck, but it may be a point of frustration for some.

Great idea, poor executionI was hoping to scratch a two year itch with this bag: A travel bag for week-long business trips; often internationally. Something that gave me as much space as possible, but without me needing to check it in. Something I can take on public transportation or a walk to the hotel after landing, but minus dragging around a rolly. And finally, something that was soft so I could potentially squish it down and out of the way.
This does all that, but not well.
First, this has too many pockets. Each one has a zipper, so packing/unpacking this is like a symphony of zippers. Check out the patagonia video review to see the sub pockets.
Second, whomever designed the shoulder strap should be fired. The shoulder pad is slick and slides off your shoulder easily; requiring a constant one-handed brace as you walk around. The anchors for this strap are mounted in the middle of the width of the bag, which when loaded, is about 2-3 inches away from your body. The net result is that the weight of the bag actually pulls it off your shoulder.
Third, no cinching straps. This 45L bag is completely soft, so when it's unloaded, it looks pretty flaccid. A side cinching strap or two would go a long way in keeping the weight close to your body for shoulder and backpack carry modes, as well as helping you pack more in for longer trips.

Good bag for quick tripsGot the bag for short business trips-1-2 nights. Tired of hauling around a computer bag and carry-on. Bag works well and is sturdy for the several trips I have used it. Fits in all overheads, except for the puddle jumper regional jets. ,,,,It can hold 2 days of business casual clothes and a laptop. Compartment for pens and notepads is a little on the small side. Hard to get much more then one book or notepad in it.,,,,For the price it was the best one I found and with Patagonia you know the quality will be good and they will fix any defects or tears. Haven't used the backpack straps yet, but I can see where that would come in handy if you were hauling it around for awhile. ,,,,Would recommend it if you are trying to get in and out of airports or are doing a lot of quick trips and looking to travel lighter.

The new way to carry onI went to NYC with a friend and she had the Patagonia MLC. I thought it worked great so I went home and told my husband about it. He liked the idea of a back bag suitcase so we bought one and used it on a trip. It did the job so we bought another one so we would have two. My nephew graduated high school and we thought this would be the perfect graduation gift for him. My father is retired and enjoys traveling and adventure so we bought one for him for Christmas. Basically I could brag about how great this bag is, but I think the proof is the fact that we bought four of these and they are not cheap. The thing that makes this bag awesome is that it fits under your seat on the really small planes. On the larger planes we place it overhead. It fits all your clothes from a long weekend trip to about 6 days. This bag might not be for everyone, but in my opinion the pros outweigh the cons and I am obviously a fan. Happy Traveling!

great all around carry on luggageI'm usually lugging around my rollaboard from travelpro, but this is a good alternative to not checking in luggage. In fact, this actually fits a ton of items into such a small bag. On the back there is sufficient padding for your laptop. The mesh compartment is where most of my luggage goes and this pairs well for packing cubes. Front has many compartments for storage. This wasn't the case with older MLCs, but this one is more separated and there seems to be room for everything! My biggest gripe is the fact that the zipper gets snagged in the main zipper compartment. To get around this, get a piece of fabric tape, or gaffer tape, and seal the front seam so that it becomes more stiff. I wish Patagonia would actually put some stiffer backing on the bottom of the seam. That would solve the problem right away. Oh yes, back pack straps are comfy and good for carrying on the back if needed. Upgraded from the last version. Overall good bag!

Best carry on bag ever?Amazing bag. I am not a fan of checking bags in. This bag always got everything I needed to travel with to the place i need. Seriously, it was perfect. However, the zipper, as some people have mentioned was not so best. It frequently got stuck. So, you do not mind a bag that is perfect besides a zipper that gets stuck, this is for you.

Carries it All!!!I bought this to use as my only bag for 2-4 day business trips. This bag carries everything I need and there is still room. I was concerned the bag would be too large as a carry on and I would get glares from other passengers on the plane. However, it is literally the perfect size.
