"Great for cycling in semi-cold climates!" 10/24/11
Have been using this all summer here in Oslo for cycling to work in the mornings (10-14 degrees centigrade). Keeps me warm, super light, feels nice and silky, doesn't get caught on other layers you might put over it, breathes like a dream. I love it. Capilene 1 is my new choice for exercise shirts.
"Nothing is better than Capilene 1" 03/03/11
Ok, so my son is going to sweden in 3 days (it's March) and if I know him he will bring shorts and a t-shirt. My challenge was to keep him warm without having to advise him to wear thermals. I will tell him these are special undershirts that he can just wear under whatever else he is wearing. I can sleep at night knowing that he will not be itchy, will be super comfortable and (if he remembers to bring his coat) there is a good chance he will be warm enough to walk around stockholm and act cool.
"great light baselayer" 02/06/11
i think the capilene 1 is the best baselayer in the capilene series. very lightweight, very comfortable, great formfitting fit. the smooth texture makes it easy to add or remove layers. perfect balance of warmth and breath ability.
"Well worth the purchase" 01/19/11
Soft, comfortalbe, fit's well......and wears well. I've been trying to find something to replace my crummy underlayer long sleeve cotton t's....and this is the shirt. very happy to have found it. Super fast shipping too!
"Pretty happy" 12/16/10
Got this for my boyfriend, who is still traumatized after moving to Michigan from Arizona. He's been using the shirt as a baselayer for backpacking and other outdoor activities where he's sweating outside in the freezing Michigan cold. He seems pretty happy with how warm he is and the shirt seems to wick really well. He's got a very athletic build so I was a little surprised when the sleeves were a kinda loose-fitting, which caused them to bunch a bit when he layered this shirt under his fleece shirt (which is fairly snug). Not a huge deal, but I expected a closer fit through the arms since the torso was so nicely fitted. All in all, it's a nice basic layering piece.
"Greatest synthetic layer, but still not wool." 10/28/10
The Capilene 1 was my first base layer purchase when I got into backpacking, it's probably one of the most touted layers by any major outdoor gear source, and for a reason. It really is a great shirt. Like all synthetics, though, it's held back. After a few days on trail it STINKS. It's not a fault of Patagonia or their products, it's just synthetics. If you're a solo hiker with a stuffy nose, no big deal. If you're thru hiking with your girlfriend - spend the money on silk or Merino wool. Trust me!
"Recycle when it stinks too bad" 08/20/10
I would echo most of the other reviews here. It is a fabulous baselayer for all conditions. In summer or sunny winter days while skinning, it keeps the sun off. When it's cold, it is the first layer of warmth. However, the Funk Factor is truly unbelievable. I find that I *should* get rid of it after one season, and *need* to get rid of it after two or three. Donating to charity is one option, although some may have ethical problems with that. Returning it to Patagonia for recycling is another option with their Common Threads Recycling Program.
"Very comfortable but can get stinky" 07/21/10
This shirt feels great. It's a bit shiny like all the Cap 1 shirts but fells almost like you're wearing nothing at all. It does snag easy and can get stinky if you wear it more than one day....and I'm not a very sweaty, stinky type. I'm 6'3", 190 lbs and the XL is slightly loose fitting without being baggy. I leave the super baggy fit for my pants, which I like to wear just above the knees so all the excess cloth gathers around my ankles and scrapes the ground.
"Extremely comfortable but can get stinky" 05/27/10
I love how light and breathable these shirts are. It's almost as if you're not wearing anything. Unless it's hot out. In that case, don't be silly. Wear the short sleeve version. I like to use it for bike rides when it's in the 60's. You just can't wear it more than twice if you're going to be doing lots of sweating because it can tend to get smelly. And no, I don't have a bad BO problem.
"Light and comfy next to skin" 05/02/10
This is a great piece alone for sunny days, or even high exertion in cooler temps. Beyond that, it's cut a bit tighter than patagonia capilene so it layers well underneath other layers (like cap 3 or R1).It does get stinky very quickly (1 wearing!), and can hold a little of that stink between washings if you just use regular soap, so avoid if that bothers you. I'm already married off so I don't really worry about that.
"Great as a baselayer or by itself" 04/01/10
I dont know how this shirt does it but it keeps you warm when its cold and cool when its hot(i think its magic). The only complaint that i have is that the first time i took it out i got some piling under my backpack straps but other than that its the bomb.
"One of the first things I pack..." 02/12/10
If i'm going out of town for a couple of days, or i'm going into the mountains for a couple weeks...this shirt is honestly one of he first things into my bag. It's warm when it needs to be, it's cool when it needs to be, and it's very lightweight. I don't understand it, but then again, I don't make the stuff...I just test it : )
