The Patagonia Men’s R1 Hoody is a fleece pullover for active adventures on the trail or skiing down the mountain. The Polartec Power Dry polyester fleece has a grid pattern, which helps to regulate temperature by quickly wicking moisture off your skin and drying it out. It even provides stretchy movement and makes it easier to stuff into your bag for later. The smooth feel will put a smile on your face, and additional layers glide over top easily. Lighter weight fabric at the pits, cuffs, and waist minimizes bulk and increases breathability. The off-center zip makes the balaclava-style hood more comfortable against your face, so you can pretend you’re scuba diving in the winter.

Men's Fit Guide Details & Info

Patagonia's measurements refer to body size and NOT garment dimensions. Sorry for yelling about it.

Each Patagonia product is designed and shaped specifically for its intended use, and below are their generalized four fit descriptions, and details about each fit. The Patagonia fit for each style can be found in the product description features or specifications.

• Conforms to the body's contours.

• Closer-fitting. Slim-fitting technical garments may be worn over baselayers and light midlayers.

• Neither slim nor oversized. Regular-fitting technical garments may be worn over heavier midlayers. Men's regular fit pants have a slimmer fit through that thigh, lower leg, and cuff.

• Drapes loosely on the body. Men's relaxed fit pants have a bit of extra room through the hip, thigh, lower, and cuff.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic piece of clothing This is the best piece of clothing I have owned. Incredibly versatile, it comes in handy in so many applications. Excels for winter running, cold weather climbing (as a base layer), even working through the winter as a window cleaner. My only caution is the sizing. As has been noted before, it runs tight. I typically wear medium in Patagonia and this is cutting it close. I can just, JUST fit a t-shirt base layer under it. Despite the tight fit it doesn't restrict movement at all. If using it as an active base layer it is perfect, hands down. If in doubt i would go a size up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cannot say enough good things about this! Used this on a 12-day backpacking trip in September at pretty high (10,000-ft plus) elevation. It was definitely my go-to insulating layer under the puffy jacket, and was great for other times when it wasn't super cold. This quickly became my favorite piece of gear. The hood will fit under a helmet if needed, and you can also put this on wearing a helmet as the zipper goes pretty far down. Love the off-centered zipper that allows the hood to comfortably cover your mouth. The thumb loops are an awesome extra feature, and the arms are extra long for great coverage. The seams are sewn so that the shirt fits very well and they don't rub you the wrong way under a pack. Overall, a highly recommended piece of clothing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly rated for a reason Most everyone already knows it but the R1 hoody is great. Love the R1 fabric, comfy against the skin, warm, smooth faced so works great under other stuff. The hood is great (snug), the zip is great, the sleeves with thumbholes are great, the length is great. The only thing to complain about is that it looks a bit funky if you're wearing it casually, it definitely has a technical look to it particularly with the eccentric zip. For just lounging around the house, I prefer the capilene 4 hoody, but if I could only own one I'd keep the R1.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Tight fit This review is about fit, I never got the chance to put it through its paces technically. I am 5'10" and 170-175lbs. I normally wear a medium but this was too small in the chest (I'm a 39-40 suit size) to layer anything under it and it bunched up under the arms. The length in the waist was very good and I could put my hands over my head without it moving above my belt. ,,,,My biggest complaint, and this goes above ordering the wrong size, is the balaclava. I really liked this feature but it was unusable. The fit was snug against my face and to tuck my nose under made it painfully tight. I would order a large and give that a try but they are not in stock. I ordered an ArcTeryx Fortrez and Westcomb Boreal instead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it so much I purchased 2 more I am not sure why I initially purchased the R1 hoody, but it was so freaking cold this winter, and I liked the idea that you could zip up the hood and cover your neck. Being a teacher, I judge just about anything I buy anymore on how it can stand up to the rigors of RECESS...dum dum dum. I love it!! It is so cozy to put on, and the zip neck and hood really offers protection from the wind. I have purchased the glass blue, a very wild yellow and black, and I am looking forward to next years colors. It seems very stylish. I think it looks good out in the regular world too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A no regret piece... This is a great fleece/insulating layer. Comfortable, warm, breathes well, and looks great. The off-center zipper is a great design improvement over most zip-necks on the market, and the thumb "loops" are super strong and incorporated right into the seam of the piece's arms. The reinforced material along the bottom of the torso and sleeves also prevents stretching and hugs the body to prevent drafts. One warning: there is a significant jump in fit between the medium and large sizes. I go back and forth between large and medium with Patagonia's slim and alpine sized pieces. I'm 6'0", 168" (give or take) and found the medium just a bit too snug to wear with a fitted base layer. The large has more room than I typically like in a layering piece but I really find the overall fit extremely comfortable to move, climb, and sleep in.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice fitting hoody that insulates very well and looks great This hoody is a great mid-layer for anyone who loves being outdoors. It's not designed to block the wind (at least in my experience), but just by putting on a light T-shirt, I had no wind problems (or just wear a shell).,,,,The hooded top actually works very well and serves as a nice insulator. I hope to have experience wearing it while sleeping to see how it works. My expectations is that it will work very well as it is very comfortable.,,,,As for fit, I normally wear a chest size 40 or a M, but I sized up to a L per other's suggestions. I am happy the fit, especially when wearing it as a mid-layer.,,,,Should you buy it? It's not cheap in price or quality. If you want a hoody that is designed well, made well, and you can keep for many trips in the future, this is your hoody. Also, Patagonia is an amazing company that stands by their products.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Patagonia's best product? I don't buy much Pata-gucci stuff, but this is a worthwhile piece of gear. If you're a climber and have the misfortune of not living in the Southwest, this will help get you through winters. It is cut long such that it tucks well under your harness and doesn't get in the way. Durable compared to the lightweight puffy coats and not as bulky so you don't feel like you're wearing a jacket when you climb. I climb with this over a T-shirt in freezing weather (I do add a windbreaker at belays). YMMV.
