DWR tech

Durable Water Repellant
DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is a coating that is applied to fabrics which makes them water-resistant, or hydrophobic. It's cute to think of a fabric as being afraid of water. Now if only they could make a bearphobic coating. A DWR finish doesn't interfere with breathability, which makes it perfect for adverse conditions in the backcountry.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Idea, Decent Execution I got this jacket for two reasons: I wanted a rain jacket that could stow easily, and I wanted a rain jacket that was actually waterproof. While the jacket does superbly with the former, I could be a little happier with the latter. The jacket is really thin and is waterproof in mist and light rain, but if I'm in a pretty steady rain for more than about ten minutes I might as well have not worn the jacket at all. On another note, my zipper ripped a tiny hole in the bottom of the jacket when I was stowing it once, but that might've been my fault. That being said, if you just want a really lightweight, manageable "rain" jacket, this is a good buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid warmth-to-weight performance Good:,,- Excellent windproofing,,- Sufficient DWR water resistance for dry snow and light rain,,- As breathable as you can get,,- Lightweight, packable,,- Durable enough to last me a thru-hike of the Colorado Trail, plus a year of climbing approaches, bike commuting, backcountry skiing and bikepacking.,,- Patagonad's bomber guarantee,,,,Bad:,,- Beware the carabiner loop. My stuffed Houdini ripped off of my harness 300 feet up a desert tower and plummeted to its early demise. I promptly replaced it with the same.,,,,Ugly:,,- You, skinning up a ridge on a cold, windy winter ascent without this thing or an equivalent.. Also recommended: Montane Litespeed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light, Lean, and Good Looking I was looking for a light, easy-to-pack jacket that would reduce the bite of bike commuting on those mornings that are cool, but not cold enough for a regular jacket. The Houdini over-delivers, as is typical with most Patagonia products. It's a quality piece, and packs down easy. The only downside of its compactness, is that I often misplace it. It's definitely not waterproof, and is water resistant at best. A good minute or two and a rain shower and it is soaked through and through - obviously though, that's not its intended purpose. All in all, it's a great jacket and I highly recommend it. Cheers!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blocks The Wind This is the third Patagonia Houdini that I have purchased. Two are in bright colors because I use them for jogging. But I also take one of these jackets almost everywhere I travel since it weighs only three ounces; it is almost un-noticed until I need it. I am tall, thin and get cold when the wind blows on me. The Houdini blocks the wind and keeps me comfortable. While the bright colors have been fine for mountains, deserts, lakes and oceans, they have been a bit strange for places like Paris, London and New York, so I recently bought a Houdini in blue. I recommend Houdinis to friends and relatives, and am extremely positive about it - - as long as you are not too heavy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight, great for layering with Nano Air. Extremely light weight, packable, and functional - just like what everyone else says. I can wear this over a t shirt to walk around in Disneyland to take the wind off an otherwise warm day. Can pack it away with no trouble once the day warms up. Also nice to take down to the beach when those coastal winds pick up. I've found it also pairs GREAT with the Patagonia Nano Air jacket. One provides super light weight warmth, the other blocks out wind. Easily keeps you warm with minimal bulk/weight. Does fine against light rain, but I wouldn't expect much during a downpour. I'm 6', 180lbs and I got a large. It's a little big when worn over a t shirt, but fits perfectly over the nano air. If I didn't use this for layering, I would probably get a medium.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm usually too lazy to write product reviews BUT this impressive jacket demands it! I bought the Patagonia Men's Houdini Jacket for my husband to use when he runs with our husky. He scoffed in derision upon first holding the jacket because it was half the thickness and weight of his old windbreakers, but, as always, I know better: the jacket is amazing! It's warm, wicks moisture well so he's not clammy with sweat, and provides ample protection from the elements. But the most awesome thing is that the hood actually fits his huge hard head comfortably. This man, who always refuses to wear head-covering while shoveling three feet of snow in subzero weather, actually modeled the hood for me. The Houdini is his best jacket in terms of quality and efficiency. (I want one too…)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best of the bunch for a ultralight wind cheater I looked at several ultralight wind jackets before selecting the Patagonia Houdini. A friend had one he loved so I saw it before I ordered from Moosejaw. My only mistake was ordering a medium. I'm 5'7" 150 pounds, athletic build (and 69 years old although that doesn't having anything to do with the fit). The medium was snug and would have limited it to wear over just a base layer. I returned the medium for a large and now have room for base layer, wool shirt, and a light sweater. I'm accumulating gear for a 10 day excursion to Alaska, and the Houdini will definately make the trip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The most used item in my closet. Bought a houdini after wearing a friend's while out in the north cascades climbing and promptly bought one when arriving back in town. This jacket is phenomenal for me in that I am very warm blooded and never really want to throw on a thick windshell/insulating. Instead, I can have a longsleeve T on and the Houdini and be fine for most cold, windy days. The thing COMPLETELY blocks the wind. During the cooler months I'd say I wear this at least 4 times a week. It's great both in the mountains (I've used it in the Bugaboos and while skiing) and to just run around town in. The only downside is that it is not fully waterproof, but I knew that going into it.,,Spark notes: best windbreaker you can buy for both looks and usability.
