The Patagonia Men’s Capilene 4 EW ¼ Zip Hoody is an expedition weight base layer for hitting the powder or snuggling with a mug of cocoa. The Capilene 4 is the warmest base in the Capilene line so you’re in for a treat during the cold months. Next to your skin the fleece interior is so soft, while the outside has a smooth face, so you can pull on other layers with ease. Thumb loops ensure the sleeves stay in place and the high collar with hood keeps you warm when the wind picks up. The long center zipper quickly regulates your temperature and the chest pocket keeps your favorite snack close by.

Patagonia knows its stuff. This quarter-zip hoody is a lovely way to get around the yurt on an icy morning, and under a sweater it’s positively toasty. “How cool. Is it a hoody? Is it underwear?” my mother asks. My best friend answers her: “I don’t know what it is, but I kind of want one.” Yeah, yeah, it’s meant to be an expedition-weight base layer accompanied by semi-magical technical garments woven out of moonbeams and mountain roots in a proprietary process – the Cap 4 hoody does that job just fine, too. I also own a couple Patagonia's non-hoody shirts, which are slightly more fashionable but considerably less awesome. The hood is small compared to most mid-/outer-layer hoodies, but that’s because it’s a base layer, and also because it’s designed to squeeze blood up into your head to make you smarter at altitude. I made that second part up. Or did I?
I have the capilene 4 and the capilene 4 hoody. I use the capilene 4 as a baselayer when I'm on the slopes, and I save the hoody as my baselayer when I'm walking around town. I figure my helmet keeps my head warm on the slopes, but walking around, if I don't want to have to carry a hat around, I can always rely on the hoody. This thing is great.
I really like this shirt, almost as much as I like the R1 hoody. The capilene 4 fabric I like better than the R1 for casual use, lounging around. The hood is great, double layer of material, smooth on the inside. This makes a really nice base layer. It's hard to complain by comparing this to the R1 because they are different products, but this shirt could be made better by being longer like the R1. The thumb loops on this are better than nothing but again the R1 is much better in that regard.
This is a great everyday outer layer during midwest spring and fall days. I wear this as a pullover jacket almost every day during cooler months of the year. When it gets really cold outside I'll throw this on underneath my Patagonia Down Sweater, or Arc'Teryx Atom LT for a really nice combination. My only complaint is that the material becomes a little bit "pilly" after being washed. I simply use a battery-powered lint-remover to knock off the pills and it seems to do the trick.
