"Waterproof, yes, but not very breathable." 04/17/12
I brought this hat along for a summit of the middle teton in august, came in handy when a hail storm hit. Brim kept the stones from pelting my neck and face, and my head was dry when it changed into rain. I have also worn it on summer canoe trips; I would say that it keeps the sun off great, but is very hot, and the only other reason to wear it is to fill it with water and dump on your head. Summary: ideal hat for cool rainy conditions, hence the name Seattle Sombrero.
"Get over the looks" 02/27/12
This hat performs unbelievably well in the rain and is great for keeping out the sun. I attached a tiny carabiner to it that I can strap to my pack so I can take the hat off and put it back on without digging through my rig. But if I do have to cram this thing into my pack, it takes shape again really quickly. I also like that the sides have velcro, it really helps the peripheral vision. This is a must for heavy rain or really sunny trips.
"I'm thinking you should buy this hat" 10/24/11
This hat is impressive to say the least! I've had it a short 2 weeks and I can say that it fared exceptionally well during my week long trek down into the Grand Canyon. This hat takes waterproof to a new level. It even fell in the Colorado River and floated allowing me to rescue it (along with my almost bruised ego)! It handled a nice downpour on day#3 of my trek. Head stayed dry without fail!Living in AZ & the heat, I don't recommend darker colors. The hat covered my face & my ears without problems. The adjustable strap inside is perfect for adjusting the size & the velcro sides allow you to shore up the side if you don't want to wear it bucket style.
"Not Just for Rain" 08/15/11
Of course, this awesome hat is made for the rain. The brim is great for keeping the rain off the eyes and neck and anywhere else, and the gore tex crown can't be beat. But it's not just for rain! I've taken this hat on 8 days in the BWCA and Glacier NP and saw hardly a drop of rain. It works just as well for sun in the alpine and on the lake, not to mention the chin strap for the wind that usually accompanies those areas.
"Won't Leave Home Without It" 07/26/11
I have owned a version of this hat for over 15 years and it has made every single backpacking trip I have been on. Vital rain protection, will never water log. I've held it over tinder to start a fire in the rain, used it as a bowl on a sandy beach in the sun and used it in every fashion you could think of. I tend to overheat, so I generally don't wear it during the hike. But its been super valuable to have in the remote campsites. If it rains, you will not want to be without this hat.
"Great in rain and sun" 12/22/10
This hat is marketed as rain gear, but it's also great on the beach or anywhere in the sun. The wide brim provides great sun protection, and the absorbent headband is great for sweat. Plus, it's obviously designed to manage water, so it's perfect for the beach (both in and out of the water).
"Raining? When?" 11/01/10
Here in South Texas when it rains, the salt don't pour, you have to pull over if your driving, and the streets are class 3 rapids. This hats rocks, a bit warm yes, but your head and face stays dry, match it with a good jacket, then the only thing you need are wadders. Well worth the bucks, good looks, good shade/protection, great features and performs as described. It is a must for us serious gear heads (pun intended).
"Great hat for Rain and Snow" 10/04/10
This is a great hat. And stylish. I have always wanted one so I purchased from REI. In fact I got one for all my family members. They also love it. I used it last year hiking and snowshowing. Not only did it keep me dry, but also warm. Unfortunatly, I left mine at a baseball game and it was gone. Someone else liked it! Now I am buying my second one.
