Moosejaw Staff Pick
"Five years ago on Isle Royale the moose population was down. That meant that the plant population was up, and the trails were incredibly overgrown. This would be fine except for the fact that the low lying plants that line the trail have always had an incredible ability to store water. As I and my fellow cohorts traversed these narrow passageways, the watered down plants soaked us. Although fully waterproof, there was no protection against the onslaught of water that snuck down past the tops of our boots and slowly puddled around our footbeds. I'm literally talking about pouring water out of our boots at breaks. So four years ago, I went back to Isle Royale with a pair of the Outdoor Research Verglas Gaiters. They might look ridiculous, but in the words of the wise Allen, "it's not a fashion show out there." Not needing to stop to empty water from my shoes and spend hours with them sitting by a fire at night was totally worth the $49 price tag. Unless I'm in the desert, I carry the Verglas gaiters in the top of my pack whenever I hit the trail."
