"Five years ago on Isle Royale the moose population was down. That meant that the plant population was up, and the trails were incredibly overgrown. This would be fine except for the fact that the low lying plants that line the trail have always had an incredible ability to store water. As I and my fellow cohorts traversed these narrow passageways, the watered down plants soaked us. Although fully waterproof, there was no protection against the onslaught of water that snuck down past the tops of our boots and slowly puddled around our footbeds. I'm literally talking about pouring water out of our boots at breaks. So four years ago, I went back to Isle Royale with a pair of the Outdoor Research Verglas Gaiters. They might look ridiculous, but in the words of the wise Allen, "it's not a fashion show out there." Not needing to stop to empty water from my shoes and spend hours with them sitting by a fire at night was totally worth the $49 price tag. Unless I'm in the desert, I carry the Verglas gaiters in the top of my pack whenever I hit the trail."

"Mt Rainer ... Conquered." 01/05/12
We did Mt Rainerin July and then again in november, I used these gaiters with no issues. The snow was about 20" in most parts but it never was able to get into my pants/boots. The strap that ensures that the product stays down could be slightly more durable as I'm noticing some small tears, but I have had them a couple of seasons now. The closure system at the top of the calf is easy to operate and allows for quick entry and exit. These are not for trail running, but OR does make a trail running version that you see on the moosejaw site.
"Rock the Gaiter Tan!!!" 05/10/11
Gaiters are so awesome! People don't think they help, but they do! If you are bushwhacking they protect you legs from cuts or if you are slogging through mud they keep you shoelaces/shoes/legs clean and dry! They don't take hardly any time to put on and the adjustable strap at the top helps hold them in the correct spot on your leg. And seriously, who can't admit that a gaiter tan looks cool!
"Solid product" 01/27/11
These are lightweight so it's not a big deal to bring them along. They get the job done, but I wish they were a bit for breathable. I recommend going with the blue/black color scheme for more style, as the straight black is quite plain and boring.
"Great lightweight gaiter!" 12/29/10
I did a lot of researching of different products and their reviews and kept coming back to these and am glad I did. I've taken these up Mt. Hood a few times with snow over my knees and these have been solid. Feet and legs have been dry and warm. My lower legs are pretty large and I'd be wearing snow pants, so I was kind of worried about the fit. I still ordered the size large and have been happy. They are a little snug, but still fit well and work like a champ.
"Does the job well.. but watch for those crampons!" 07/25/10
Light, packs well, very durable yet crampons will shred these things if you are not careful when you are high stepping and manage to slice above the impervious nylon crampon guard. I just finished a 30day NOLS Mountaineering course and these were close to garbage at the end but that was more than expected. I recommend using some seam-grip or other flexible adhesive to reinforce the stitching of the arch strap because it takes a lot of abuse and can come off (it took me 26 days and 100 miles in the Wind River Range, WY to have that happen). Great gaiters for a great price.
"Great for snow, maybe not so great for ice climbing" 01/04/09
I purchased these for ice climbing. I probably should have paid more attention to the description: “They’re designed to be lighter and more packable, with the same fit and performance of the originals.” I have a large gash in one of the gaiters from a crampon graze. I would have been better off with the original “Crocodile” gaiters. That said these worked fantastic in deep snow. I post holed in 3 foot snow with no issues. I wear a large pant (Mountain Hardware Stance) and ordered the large gaiters. I would have been better off with the XL size in these pants, but the large gaiters were adjustable enough to work for me. Ice Climbers look elsewhere…snow shoe people look no further.
"Lightweight and functional alternative to a Croc" 07/20/08
These guys worked out well on my snowy trip up to Bonney Pass in the Wind River area. I got these after some soul-searching and waffling between these and the OR Crocs, which a friend got. I opted for the lighter weight and perhaps less durable material. Held up well with only a little tuck from my clumbsy crampon weilding and the rip stop material helps with that. Water protection was excellent and the velcro on/off worked well and the cinch at the top fastened tight enough. Buckle at the bottom is less durable than my friends Crocs but unless your going ape, you should be fine.
