The Osprey Variant 52 Pack is a backpack that knows that sometimes you want to climb and sometimes you want to hike. This bag is into compromising: it's not going to make you choose. Use the hipbelt for support on the trail, stow the hipbelt for keeping it out of the way on the climb. Specifically designed with climbers in mind, this bag features glove-friendly buckles and a three-point system that makes for safe and secure big wall hauling. This bag doesn't give up under any conditions: an extendible spindrift collar keeps the snow out and the weatherproof and water-resistant front pocket keeps moisture away from your gear. This pack carries gear with ease, with specified loops for downhill and cross-country skis, an ice axe holster, and a compression pocket for crampons. Does anyone really like those buttered popcorn jellybeans?

"The pack that we've all been waiting for!"  08/17/11

Osprey finally made a great technical pack for winter mountaineering, rock climbing and just about anything else you want to do with it. I bought it Specifically for winter climbing trips for a fast and light alpine assaults on the Colorado 14ers. I have personally had no problems attatching anything to the outside of the pack. I carry more than enough stuff to make myself comfortable on 2-3 day winter trips where the mercury is well below freezing. I will say this much, it is a very tough bag! I have caught this pack on more sharp rocks than i can count and have yet to get anything more than an abrasion on the fabric! Great pack for winter tech routes!

"Buy this pack!"  02/28/11

As an avid rock climber, backpacker, and mountaineer I needed a pack to do all these things and more. This pack is capable of carrying more than you'd ever want to, but it also compresses very well if empty(ish). Plan to use it backpacking? It's not easy to strap much on the outside(sleeping pad) when full. It carries weight extremely well, and the waist straps are thin, but they are reasonably comfortable. This IS a climbing pack and it is geared towards climbing. The water resistant materials were great in the snow, and yet they combated the ultra-rough J-Tree granite. The water-shedding back+shoulder straps worked fantastically(never wet/frozen).

"Would definatly recommend to someone, killer pack"  12/06/10

Amazing pack, has tons of space. Can haul all of my climbing gear and personal stuff out to the face. Really love how all of my cargo can be cinched down to where nothing moves at all. The pack is also very streamlined and gives full range of movement with my arms.

"No Better Option!"  06/20/10

Ok, so it does have a few extra straps and buckles, but this pack is the bomb! I use it in all condition and at all altitudes. The fabric and construction are rock solid. It can carry a week or a day. Feels like I'm out with a daypack when wearing the 52. Great stability when getting vertical. Oh, and it's BRIGHT RED - awesome! Get it now.

"Totally Rad"  09/16/09

This pack rocks. I actually should have gotten a women's pack, being that I am female. However, I am smaller, 110lbs, and have no hips. This is the only pack that fit me, even though its made for dudes. Thats cool though. It's ultra light weight, and really puts the weight on your hips and not your shoulders. The only complaint is that I would like the pockets on the bottoms sides to fit water bottles. There is no way. You can put an energy bar in there, even though it's hard to reach when hiking, and then clip the water bottles on with a biner...or put them in your pack which sucks...so yeah..that's a problem but otherwise AWESOME!

"Some people knew what they were doing when they made this pack"  05/20/09

This thing has really smart design elements that you'll appreciate halfway through a trip or when you change the configuration. Get the 52, it's a versatile size and it can always pack up smaller. The frame is real comfy and puts most of the weight on your hips. It weighs nothing. The one thing I would add are two cinchable loops at the bottom for attaching random gear (like a tent) to the bottom of the bag; however, if you're relatively clever, like I am, you can figure out how to do it with dental floss and a carabiner.
