The Osprey Variant 37 Pack is a backpack that knows that sometimes you want to climb and sometimes you want to hike. This bag is into compromising: it's not going to make you choose. Use the hipbelt for support on the trail, stow the hipbelt for keeping it out of the way on the climb. Specifically designed with climbers in mind, this bag features glove-friendly buckles and a three-point system that makes for safe and secure big wall hauling. This bag doesn't give up under any conditions: an extendible spindrift collar keeps the snow out and the weatherproof and water-resistant front pocket keeps moisture away from your gear. This pack carries gear with ease, with specified loops for downhill and cross-country skis, an ice axe holster, and a compression pocket for crampons. Does anyone really like those buttered popcorn jellybeans?

Osprey Peripheral Frame

Osprey Peripheral Frame
Peripheral frame was a departure from the norm many years ago and it’s still the foundation of our gear hauling packs. A wire frame runs along the outside of the backpanel directly connecting the upper load lifters and the central core of the pack to the hipbelt to transition and spread the load. Allowing natural torsional movement, effective adjustable torsos, and different load range and backpanel builds makes this suspension design truly innovative.

OSPREY MEASUREMENT GUIDE

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size each pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should probably have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate. And they might accidentally touch your butt.

HOW TO MEASURE TORSO LENGTH:
• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size charts above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

HOW TO MEASURE HIPBELT SIZE:
• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelts size chart above to help determine your ideal Osprey pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little pack. This pack is great for fast and light-ish tasks. It's easy to over-stuff and can swallow all of my gear for a weekend backpacking trip if I try really hard. I haven't had a chance to try out the ski-carry but the loops are wide enough to fit my liberty double-helix skis (150-121-140 mm). It's a simple pack without many organization options - great if you're into that sorta thing. A tiny accessory strap (one of the loop straps that guides an upper compression strap) ripped but Osprey's warranty is legendary so I'm confident that if it becomes an issue they'll take care of it. I'm 6'2" with a 33" waist and I bought a large pack with a medium belt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's good for a first pack The Good things: Carries very well, felt like 3/4 the weight. The floating lid and collar let you truly over stuff it. I like that the lid has a security pocket underneath. Tons of lash points. Can fit all sizes of water bladders.,,The Bad things: When the bag is packed, the side pockets are almost unusable. If you load it up with any significant weight, you'll wish for a little thicker padding on the shoulder straps.,,All in all, an awesome pack. I purposely took it to the limits just to see what I could get away with. This will be my go to pack for day hikes and over-nighters. Anything longer you'll probably want something bigger with better suspension.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Haul it All! This is the 4th Osprey pack I've bought, none have failed. I have this same pack in the 52L just for bigger loads. Two others I climb with have it. This bad boy will haul your, iceaxes, crampons, poles, what ever you decide to stash inside and with the addition of an extra strap on each side and using the ski loops, it'll haul your snowshoes no problem. We just just love this thing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Feature rich and most comfortable pack. For those from Canada, I replaced on all my MEC pack, and I have a bunch, (Canadian version of REI) with Ospreys as they just fit better and have the features I like. For the price, obviously MEC packs are great but if you are seriously into mountaineering/climbing, spend the money on these, you are worth it!,,,,I also have the Variant 52 and the Aether 70.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As all osprey packs i love it Its a great mountaineering pack. I used to use the mutant, but found that happing no place to attach gear a problem on approach. This pack solves this issue. ,,Off course it could be lighter, but than you need a strong fabric on the mountain
