The Osprey Talon 44 Pack is a technical backpack for lightweight hiking adventures. The 44 is the largest of the Talon series, ready for two or three days around the home trails or thru-hiking. Practice paring down your gear, as there is only 44 liters of space in this little guy, although it does have it's very own zippered sleeping bag compartment at the bottom for easy access. External hydration keeps your reservoir separate from the rest of your load and two clip-in straps allow you to secure your sleeping pad to the outside. Slip into the BioStretch™ harness and hipbelt and get to hikin' on that trail.

Osprey Airscape

Osprey Airscape
Osprey's AirScape™ mesh covered ridge foam backpanels set a new standard in the industry. With its ability to keep the weight close, provide cushion, allow ventilation and add load carry is quite a list of needs from this unassuming backpanel. It successfully accomplished all of that in a way that allows it to be used in the large gear hauling packs and lightweight day hiking packs.

Osprey Peripheral Frame

Osprey Peripheral Frame
Peripheral frame was a departure from the norm many years ago and it’s still the foundation of our gear hauling packs. A wire frame runs along the outside of the backpanel directly connecting the upper load lifters and the central core of the pack to the hipbelt to transition and spread the load. Allowing natural torsional movement, effective adjustable torsos, and different load range and backpanel builds makes this suspension design truly innovative.

Osprey Framesheet

Osprey Framesheet
Whether connected to a peripheral frame on a big load carrier or as a standalone suspension on a day pack, a well-designed framesheet effectively spreads and transitions the loads across the entire body to the harness and hipbelt. With different material and stay options Osprey can make sure each individual pack has the right load carry for its intended use.

OSPREY MEASUREMENT GUIDE

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size each pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should probably have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate. And they might accidentally touch your butt.

HOW TO MEASURE TORSO LENGTH:
• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size charts above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

HOW TO MEASURE HIPBELT SIZE:
• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelts size chart above to help determine your ideal Osprey pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for a day on the trail. I was looking for a midsize pack that would hold plenty of gear for long day hikes or short weekend excursions and this pack definitely fit the bill. The pack is top loading and the compartment is very spacious, but also can be opened from the bottom so you don't have to dig all the way down for something stuffed deep inside. The storage in the upper removable pocket is also perfect for holding smaller items and the ability to remove the top completely is a nice feature. The S/M pack rides well on my 6'0 frame and doesn't feel like it pulls disproportionately on either the shoulders or back. If you're looking for a good midsize pack for some shorter trips then this pack is for you. The lifetime warranty you get with Osprey doesn't hurt

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A lot for a little I have used this pack on a couple of 3 day hikes on the AT. Also packed it for a 5 day hike, but was rained out. This bag will hold all you can cram into it, however, it gets pretty uncomfortable on the higher range of weight (35-40 lbs.) I packed it out without water at 35 lbs., put in a few 15+ mile days in Tennessee and was more than happy to take this thing off. A full bladder will bulge the back panel when the pack is full. This is a great bag for lighter weights (>28lbs) and shorter days. It's an Opsrey so it is going to last.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice lightweight backpack I am, admittedly, coming from a 7+ pound major retailer sports dept backpack, but this Osprey is a HUGE upgrade. Very lightweight but still high build quality. What I have heard of the Osprey warranty helps too (insert Tommy Boy warrantee rant flashback). It is rather small for a backpacking pack, know your equipment and if you can fit in 44 liters, but if you can this is the way to go as far as I am concerned.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect fit/size This is for hiking the Appalachian trail. Just a little over two pounds makes this perfect for me trying to hike lightweight. I'm 6' 4" and bought the L torso size and it fits like a glove, but like a glove for your back. There's not too many bells and whistles but still plenty of room for everything I need to thru hike the AT.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light & Airy Bought it on a black Friday sale. I had been eyeing the talon for some time. Couldn't resist a great deal. After receiving it I would gladly pay full price. More than I expected.
