The Osprey Porter 46 Pack is a carry-on backpack for airplane travel. The Porter 46 blends backpack with luggage, providing the padding and support you need to carry your gear while compressing down just like a regular suitcase. The StraightJacket™ wings are padded to protect your stuff and cinch it down for stabilizing the load. When you get to the plane, the harness and hipbelt stow away, for simple storage in the overhead bin. The main section is panel load, opening wide for dumping in all your clothing, while the front zippered section secures tablet, pens, pencils, and even your phone. The Porter is so much more than a backpack.

OSPREY MEASUREMENT GUIDE

Please note that the info provided above refers to the torso size each pack will fit, and NOT any dimensions of the pack. Below are some steps for how to get your torso length. You should probably have someone help take this measurement for you so it is accurate. And they might accidentally touch your butt.

HOW TO MEASURE TORSO LENGTH:
• Start at the iliac crest, which is the top of the hipbones on the side of your body. These act like a shelf for supporting a pack hipbelt.
• From this level on your spine, measure to the C7 vertebrae, the knobby bone at the base of your neck when you put your head down.
• Make sure you keep your back as straight as possible while measuring.
• This torso measurement determines what size Osprey pack you should carry. Refer to the size charts above to find your ideal size.
• If you are in between sizes, it is ideal to try them both on before ordering.

HOW TO MEASURE HIPBELT SIZE:
• Measure around your hips at your iliac crest, NOT your waist.
• A properly fitted hipbelt rides centered over the hipbones and needs to be very snug.
• The padded portion should wrap well around your hips, leaving a gap of 3 to 6 inches between the tips of the both hip pads when securely tightened.
• Refer to the Hipbelts size chart above to help determine your ideal Osprey pack size, but again, your torso length is what should determine your pack size, NOT the hipbelt.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Getting closer... Osprey, this is probably the best travel pack on the market, at least in terms of being maximum legal carry-on size, holding a ton of gear, and weighing very little. Do you want to know what would make it perfect? Really?? You do?? Cool! A Zip-off daypack option like the Farpoint 55. I would buy THAT pack, but the dimensions (even of the small size) might mean some airlines make me check it, which costs me money and time. PLEASE either redesign the Porter 46 pack to make attaching a smaller daypack much easier, OR change the dimensions of the Farpoint 55 to be more strictly airline compliant. THEN you will have a happy, loud customer for life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Great Travel Pack I've used this pack for several cross country trips and it carries everything I need. I have never had an issue carrying it on an airplane, even the smaller commuter prop planes. The compression system works great is making sure the pack will fit in even the tightest overhead bin. I took it on an extended trip through China, Vietnam and Cambodia and it was perfect. It carried everything I needed with room to spare. It was easy to handle on buses, tuk tuks, ferries and taxis. Even fully loaded, carrying it as a backpack was comfortable. To me this is the perfect travel pack for those who want a versatile, durable carry on travel pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of best Osprey packs This pack is great. It is sturdy and durable. I travel a lot, carrying heavy loads. The fact that this pack is huge enough, makes you carry as much as you need, but not over-pack it to ruin your mood after 5km. It is perfectly easy to load, lots of options to store your stuff, like mesh pockets, and those highly accessible front pockets. When carrying a sleeping bag, i just tuck it vertically between the two front straps. This pack is quiet awesome. I'd definitely recommend it to friends, and actually already did. One thing that I'd like, is to have a place for a water bottle. I know, weird. But still!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great travel pack I just returned from three weeks in Costa Rica and lived out of the Porter 46 the entire time. The amazing thing is I came back thinking I could have taken more clothing if I needed to. I did pack quite light, used some compression bags and the 46 was easy to carry distances of perhaps half a mile and most importantly it fit easily into the overhead bin of a 737/800. I did considerable research on this bag and field tested it and I heartily recommend it. It has heavy duty zippers, and very strong material overall. Check it out before you buy, I think you will be impressed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW!! Excellent bag!! I used this bag on my17 day backpacking trip through Europe and I might say it's the best travel bag around. Excellent carry on! Fit right into the overhead airplane compartments fully loaded. Easy access to everything. Loved the tuck away straps it comes with. Very comfortable even when fully loaded. I even had enough space for souvenirs on my way back! I'm most likely buying the Porter 30 for my wife (she's a bit short) so this one will look a little huge on her.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a GREAT pack... This is a GREAT travel pack. Easy to load and if you are a minimalist like me perfect for trips anywhere throughout the world. I also have a Osprey Farpoint 70 (S/M) which I use for long trips - for me that would be 5-6 weeks. But anything less than that I use the Porter 46L. Additionally, I have a Osprey DayLite which I can attach to the Porter 46L as well which gets me to about 58L total between the 2 packs. To me I feel like I can get a ton of things in the 46L - using compression cubes is key and I think if you are looking to travel "lighter" this would be a great way to get there!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Perfect I bought this pack for a 1-month Europe adventure, travelling in extreme heat as well as wet weather. When I first got this pack, I thought it was very small and was worried how I was going to fit my stuff in it (I bought it to beat the RyanAir regulations). However, this pack exceeded my expectations and it ended up being 3/4 empty by the end of the trip. It does not have many pockets, but that is okay as I just stuffed my itineraries and little things in the outside pockets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best value of the money I am kind of person who do take advantage of reviewers before buying any product. I owned the previous model which I loved it. I have utilized it during my last year's backpacking trip to Europe and it worked very well. It is the maximum legal carry on size in flight even for the budget airlines in Europe. Very spacious and good quality by Osprey. The only thing which was lacking in the older model were extra pockets (especially the one for the laptop) which Osprey listened to the customers and addressed in the newer model. As soon as It became available, I got it and looking forward to utilize it for my upcoming trip.
