I've taken this pack on two overnight trips in the Texas heat, and it has met every expectation. Very comfortable, durable, and well designed. Sizing was correct based upon the size chart as well. Tough to beat this pack for the price/capacity.
"Good small pack for short over night trips. Excelent Quality"
The Ice tool loops are very handy for ice climbing trips and I Love the pouches on the waist belt. They come in handy for camera and sun screen. I owner the Osprey Aron 110 pack as well and I know they make good quality products. This pack seams to hold up to their standards and is great for short trips where speed is the objective. You wount be hauling a 4 season tent or going on an expedition with it but you can take a bivy and the essentials for a overnight climb or hike. It would be a good summit pack fore long expeditions though.
The kestrel 48 is a great day pack. Just did a 15 mile hike in the Grand Canyon and this pack was great for the long day trip. Plenty of cargo space for clothes and water ( enough for me and about 10 others) this pack makes heavy loads seem half as lite. If you need a good day or overnight pack for under $200.00 this is a great choice.
Ill be honest, there are two things i dislike about this pack,The first is the zippered pockets on the hip belt. Great idea but terrible location. I have a m/l pack. Im a 33 waist. The zippered pockets are on my sides and i cant use them because i cant reach them to function the zipper. (you'll see)Second is the side pockets. They are where you'll want to put a water bottle. Yet the sides are to low to hold in a standared 2 liter Nalgene. Beyond those two simple things, the pack has held out great. Im fairly abusive to it and it still has no punctures, tears or abrasions that compromised the DWR finish.I have had to contact Osprey for some different things and they are top notch. They have always made me perfectly satisfied!
I bought an Osprey Kestrel a couple of years ago. What a wonderful product. Sometimes you buy something and it is SO good that you put the extra money into it. The ratio of organized compartments to large spaces is perfect and it is extremely light weight. I bought it for hiking the Appalachian Trail, but I also now find that I am using it for traveling on the train and visiting folks, it is so light weight, convenient and practical. So I have a hiking backpack and a piece of luggage all in one! And despite hiking, camping, getting soaked, throwing it on airplanes, etc., it has held up extremely well and still looks great.
Living in Missouri, my options are somewhat limited for multi-day hiking excursions. I find that this pack is the perfect size for 2-night/3-day hikes. I normally go out with an ultralight 1-person tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, water, food, stove, and other miscellaneous items, and this pack seems to be the perfect size without being too bulky or heavy. Osprey really seems to have thought out every aspect and constructed an extremely high-quality pack here, from the built-in whistle, to the built-in rain cover.I tried on quite a few other packs, but this was by far the most comfortable (on my body at least) in its price range.
I recently purchased this item and all I can say is that I am impressed! It superbly combines functionality and comfort. My sleeping pad fits perfectly in the straps, and the bottom compartment is great for my sleeping bag. All the packs I've owned previously have had one pocket up top so it's nice to have to two zippered pockets...nice having smaller items stored in the upper one. I have not maxed this bag out, but I have noticed that it can maintain a wide shape due to the side straps and side zippered pockets. Not an issue though and I am sure it can be adjusted when packing. Awesome all around bag.
Rated for 35 pounds; most comfortable if loads kept to less than 25 pounds. Would be a good daypack, but I use it as my overnight pack (2 -5 night trips.) I carry 18 pounds (including food, pack, gear and water) for a summer weekend, so it's perfect. 48L capacity means you have to commit to a minimalist style, using very light, compact gear (no synthetic sleeping bags.) I can fit winter gear in, too. The pack combines a supportive, adjustable suspension and hipbelt with an excellent pack bag design; cut off the extraneous internal divider, straps, and gimmicks, and you are only a few ounces over 3 pounds. Hipbelt pockets are useful. My favorite feature: the long zippered outside pockets - perfect place to keep rain gear handy (or maybe tent.) 2-compartment lid a bit gimmicky, but may be useful to you; lid does not fully float. Water bottle pockets a bit stingy - hard to get a full liter bottle in, but you can always put a half-liter bottle in each side. All in all, my favorite pack.
Researched for a pack to do the Camino in Spain---500 miles @no days off, 18 pounds gear --yes, I am going...did a day trip check out. Comfortable unit, adjustable everywhere, tons of pockets--stash area's--did not get rained on, so did not field test included cover. NICE LOOP set up for tent or pad, nice bottom compartment for tent---bottom line--SOLIDPACK
"extremely comfortable and useful pack for the money"
i recently got this as a christmas gift this past year. honestly, best pack i've owned. its comfortable as anything, holds a ludacris amount of gear, no unnecessary straps or anything. I just cant say enough good things about it. I'll review more about it after this puppy gets really put through its paces this spring
I got this pack this past christmas and i love it. really rugged and sturdy. it holds an amazing amount of gear. the built in rain cover is brilliant and easy to use, holds hiking poles easily, water bladder, etc. great buy for the money. Its extremely comfortable, even after an all day hike. its just a real versatile pack and anyone who gets this pack will absolutely love it.
